NOTE to mods: This is not a thread to start a flame war between Yugioh fans and Magic the Gathering fans.

Hello, Escapist readers! I am in need of some help. I'm currently writing a paper on the economic competition between MTG and Yugioh. So I thought it would be interesting to talk about the different advertising tactics used to promote both games. I, for one, heard about MTG because a bunch of my friends play and obviously the TV show is going to be the major advertising tactic for Yugioh. But how about you'll? How did you here about MTG/Yugioh? Any thoughts on either game?

Thank's for participating!

Yu-Gi-Oh I heard through the TV show (like Pokemon).

Magic I heard through word of mouth and whatnot. I don't think I've EVER seen a Magic commercial...

If it helps for your paper, I believe that the way Magic did it is the much better way. Yu-Gi-Oh (and again, Pokemon) both have their own multi-media brands setup but I feel that it takes away from...for lack of a better word, prestige of the card game. There is a reason that Magic has thrived for 30-some years while Yu-Gi-Oh has dwindled. YGO has pockets of big fans but when I go to any card shop, Magic dominates all.

Personally, I tried them both and fell out of them both (and Pokemon!). I never could shake the feeling that someone spending more money than me would have the advantage. Whether that is true or not is debatable...

Thanks for your reply! And I can see what you mean, the TV show most certainly will detract from the games creditably and now that you mention it, YGO was defiantly more of a fad, while MTG has a a much larger 'culture' surrounding it.

Oh and I agree with you about the money thing, thats why when I play I only play causally, with friends and what not.

I played yugioh when I was a young kid but moved onto magic because of its greater depth in strategy. Both are good don't get me wrong but as someone who has played both I would say magic has more over all strategy and less luck.

I always found that was more of a thing when it came to yogioh rather than magic. While it does apply to both them cards in magic have to suit the theme of the rest of the deck and if they don't it doesn't matter how good the card is you likely won't be able to either play it or get the most out of it.

I heard of both through...advertisement, I suppose. First time I heard of MtG was from an article in a gaming magazine. It wasn't exactly an advertisement but...yeah, worked as such - it explained what Magic was and how one played it. I thought it was really unteresting but it was impossible to get into it, so it was way later that I actually played it. As for Yu-Gi-Oh, I watched it on TV. I'm not sure but I suppose it counts as advertisement. It was still later that I played it for real but sooner than Magic.

I watched Yu-Gi-Oh, while I learned of Magic the Gathering during an anime club, for some reason. I guess that's really it for me. Never played MtG, just a tiny bit of Yu-Gi-Oh. The game's rules and all are fun, but I don't like the advertising in there.

I LIKED YU-GI-OH WHEN IT WASN'T FOCUSED ON THE CARD GAME!!

Yu-Gi-Oh was through the show. Magic was through school. Never played Magic, though. I'm a Yu-Gi-Hoe!

I know about Yugioh from that anime while honestly I only heard about M:TG via the Loaded Ready Run videos they do about that game.

Yu-Gi-Oh! via anime, like everyone else.

In terms of statistics, I believe more people play Magic, but Yu-Gi-Oh! makes more money. Don't actually know, however.

Ah man that short takes me back to the early days of xplay

OT: For me it was the cartoon that got me into yugioh back in the day

A cartoon based on a childs product sells very well

Heard/saw them both though seeing others play them.

Only card game I heard/saw via TV has been Pokemon and *insert random shitty card series here*.

20 years, really. It started in 1993. I know because that's when I heard about MTG because it was some crazy, weird new thing that appeared in local game shops and was rapidly gaining popularity, and my friends and I grabbed some starters to check it out. A couple people were a little ahead of the curve and knew a bit about it already. Anyway, we were all immediately doomed for the next few years as soon as we started playing.

I probably heard about Yu-Gi-Oh (in the sense of being aware of its existence, at least) online thanks to flamewars about it and MTG and all the people who just wouldn't shut up about which was better/worse, and running as fast as I could from those "discussions" was about the extent of my involvement with it.

I had heard about Magic the Gathering long before I heard of Yugioh, but I never had the opportunity to try it out because I knew no one who played it.

I then heard of Yugioh through the show, then eventually started getting into the card game, now I play the online versions with my friends.

I played Magic back when Beta came out. I played until the end of the Kamigawa block, then quit.

Magic now is an unbalanced mess. There doesn't seem to be any strategy to the game anymore.

Yu Gi Oh has always been an unbalanced mess though, so I never really took it seriously.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. If anything they have cut down on the number of broken cards they are printing now compared to the first few sets. Though some mistakes, like Jace, the walletsculptor still appear. The part about there being no more strategy to the game on the other hand is complete bullshit. I have no idea what you mean by that. If you mean that most decks play creatures now, as opposed to decks from 10-15 years ago where it was possible to play a completely creatureless control deck, i don't see this as lack of strategy.

I myself prefer creatureless deck (control or combo) and i am sad that you kinda have to play creatures now because they are so good, but that doesn't mean deck nowadays lack strategy. They also nerfed certain types of cards like counterspells and land distruction, and i do not agree with that move, but that opened other types of strategies more. This is mostly true for standard though. If you play format with wider pools of cards, like modern or legacy, than those types of strategies are still viable, so i don't see that much of a problem.

Heard about Yugioh through the tv show, didnt notice it was an actual real life TCG until I was in a games workshop when I went there to play MTG after my friend convinced me to play it.
