A Chinese rickshaw driver has taken to chaining his son up while at work, for fears that he will be kidnapped.

Looking at this, I have to wonder...

Why are people taking pictures instead of calling the police and freeing the child?

Serious Bofus says "While I realize this is from a legit news source, I've got to wonder if it was real. I think it's unlikely that the Ol' Chain Around the Ankle could be made tight enough not to slip off the toddler's foot, but loose enough to not damage the kid's ankle. The pic could've easily been staged, so I wonder if an appropriate amount of source-checking was done by MSN."

The first thought to enter my mind, though, was "Well you gotta lock the kid down somehow or someone will take of with it. Duh."

I have no idea what to say about this one...

He's right though, better than to let the kid be kidnapped...

I have my doubts about MSN as a news service as well, so I did a quick check before making the original post.

The only other reference I can find to it is here.

Its a good thing those who traffic in children have never heard of wire cutters. the brace around his leg looks like a hanger wire.

I wonder what that kid will grow up to be... You know, after such a good childhood.

Altheus_Necron, the Daily Mail is as reliable as The Sun.

In addition, does anyone other than me think that lock can be easily picked?

I'm going to assume that the Sun is not terribly reliable.

We don't have the Sun here in Australia. *insert bad pun here*

What a terrible way to grow up. Chained to a pole outside with nothing for entertainment, constantly being gawked at by passersby.

But I feel sorry for the dad too. This is just a depressing story altogether.

Imagine the Herald Sun with more bias. The Daily Mail would have wanted Aborigines out of Australia "back to their Dreamland!" (sic)

The Sun is a British tabloid as far as I know. As for the Australia pun...well, I'm Norwegian. Have no reason to point and laugh, really :p

Welcome to Maoist China.

Why doesn't the Dad build a better rickshaw and take the kid with him? I drive for a living and there's just no way..... I take my kids to work and keep them at my side when I have to.

I'm praying this whole thing is faked, and yet, even if this one is there are plenty of real situations just as bad or worse.

Oh, so it's the equivalent of our Telegraph. Shlock journalism masquerading as a respectable publication. Ok then.

Actually, there's been massive amounts of son-napping going around in China. Men caught trafficking in stolen boys to rich men who have no sons can be sentenced to death if caught, so these boys must be worth an unseemly amount of money. However, anyone who's ever had a bike stolen knows that a chain will not prevent theft if someone REALLY wants what you have locked up.

Daily Mail =/= credibility. Ever.

Also: I'm sure a backpack you could pop the kiddy in (and take him with you) would be cheaper than that chain and whacking great big lock.... hmmmmm...
