Pop-out ads, such as the one in the top right of your screen right now (excluding publishers club), seem incredibly ineffective too me. At least for me, when a company runs an ad for their product that pops out to take up much of the screen, causing me to accidentally go to their site, I am less likely to buy the product compared to a company that has static ads that only take up their normal portion of the screen.

On the other hand though, these ads must have some effectiveness, or they would not be used.

What are you guys' opinions on the effectiveness and use of pop-out ads?

I hate pop-out adds.

I close them the second I see them. So in my case they're not particularly effective in any way, shape or form.

Yeah. I've accidentally expanded and clicked on the WoW pop-out at the top of the Escapist a few times. If I wasn't determined to never get WoW before, I certainly am now.

Chances are, they're more interested in giving you a virus or grab your information than trying to sell you something.

But while you might hate it, at least they got you to see their name. They're hoping that you would forget their annoying ad, but remember their name. So imagine if Pringles did pop-up ads and you had never heard of them before. You thought their ad was stupid so you closed it. Then you're at the store a couple of weeks later and see a can of Pringles. You remember hearing the name before, so you buy them. Yeah, you might think that no one falls for that but apparently people do. That's why they continue to do it.

That exact ad must be part of some secret conspiracy to drive me insane. Everytime I move my cursor from the toolbar, I always pass over it and it blocks what I want to hit.

They're damn annoying. Although they're not as annoying as the adverts that automatically have sound. I don't want to be aimlessly browsing and suddenly hear a woman talking about washing powder. And then if you have multiple tabs open you have to search through them all to find the annoying advert that is, quite frankly, invading my life. How about you make an interesting advert that I actually want to listen to and then give me the option to turn the sound on.

The reason I made this thread is because on my way to the forum that ad blocked me something like four times in a row.

FunnyJunk used to a have a real problem with sound adverts. Haven't heard one there in a while though. It was very annoying when it did.

I feel like its a guerrilla tactic by whomever made them to force me to pay attention to their product/message. Its offensive, invasive, and I too click them off as soon as I can.
That's probably the best description I've heard of them.

Nothing in the world makes me not want to buy a product more than pop-up or pre-video adds.

When an add slaps you with "hurr hurr buy my crap" for thirty seconds, I say "screw your product."
