Hi guys.

The desktop computer I usually use for gaming has come into a very large issue.
It has a lot of trouble rendering some web pages and and videos, on sites such as youtube and here. Also it doesn't like connecting to servers for game launchers such as League of Legends, APB: Reloaded and The Old Republic.

Does anyone know what could be the problem?

Cheers

When you say "some webpages" can you give examples?

Anyway, if you're having issues with games, then it's not port 80 - that's for HTTP traffic only. Do you have a firewall? Are you behind a firewalled network, such as in uni or something? Are you using a VPN? If you have a router, try restarting it and see if that changes anything.

Well it is safe to assume all sites that are loaded on the one machine, the sites have strange issues, mainly to do will css and videos and images, yes I am behind the firewall of a BT Hub 3, it is a home network, I have tried restarting the router, switching between wireless to wired(which both of those have no affect) and also tried to assign a static ip to the machine and helps slightly but no significant changes happen.

If web pages only appear busted but are otherwise working it's unlikely to be a problem with your connection. Try clearing out your cache and update your browser if you're using an out-dated version. If you try another browser it should give you an idea whether or not it's a local problem as opposed to a connection issue.

As far as the other issues, APB: Reloaded is notorious for having unresolvable connection issues so let's put that one to the wayside for now, though if it get's fixed in the process that's just a bonus. If you have any kind of software firewall (most security suites include one) try disabling that before connecting and see if it has an impact. Trying them on a different computer altogether is also a good idea since it should give you a good idea whether the problem is localized to your desktop. If not, I suggest doing a factory reset on your router/modem. Resetting the power will fix a lot of issues but sometimes settings can somehow fuck themselves up and give you connection issues (I had a long running problem like this that was eventually solved by a factory reset). Just make sure you know your ISP login information (if applicable) before you reset since you'll have to re-enter it afterwards. If all that fails it may be a problem outside of your local network, or you may have a hardware problem with your router.

Hmm...really weird. Can you try pinging something? Anything. Actually try it with a website that works and then with one that doesn't - try it with more than 4 packets - you can use -t to specify unlimited (until you stop it) - just do ping -t google.com (or whatever website) and then stop it with Ctrl+C. Let ping run for a bit just to get some good sample.

Dunno, if you get packet loss that would at least explain some of the weirdness...but won't exactly explain why is it. If you don't get packet loss...it'd be weirder.

One last question - you don't happen to be behind a proxy are you?

I have tried pinging places like google and other such sites and I get 4 replies each time with no problem. Now I have tried pinging this site with the added -t and there are no replies, each request times out, yet pinging Google brings back replies each time. And no I am not behind any proxies.

Snowy, I believe I have deduced that the problem is only bound to the one machine and I have tried factory resetting the router and it makes no difference what so ever. Also the programs that run have been allowed access through the firewall so that shouldn't be a problem. As far as browsers go, chrome is running the latest version.

I do not know whether this will work but I will give it a try; factory resetting the machine.

It probably won't work but The computer needed it, it was cluttered and I don't like clutter...

Tried pinging places on my laptop, places it can go with no issue and they all time out... bizarre, I have pinged here, no replies, tried to ping an APB server, got replies from there and finally tried pinging crashmania.net and got no reply. Think I will try factory resetting the router again.

UPDATE: Nope that didn't work..

FURTHER UPDATE: Factory resetting the machine has fixed the issue with weird web problems and the games now run fine. Yet it is strange how it doesn't reply when I ping the escapist.

Yaaay! I was beginning to think it was some sort of problem with the network card itself. I've had these before - for some reason it would randomly stop working in Windows and it would do it weirdly (getting ping responses but not being able to open web pages, for example). Although, that was fixed by restarting.

And I did try it and I'm not getting ping responses for the escapist. They've probably blocked the ICMP messages in their firewall - it's not unusual to do that for larger websites - Amazon do it too. Don't really sweat over it.

Yeah well I was hoping it wasn't a nic problem and thank goodness it wasn't. Ahh right well that sounds almost the opposite of the problem I had, ha. Yeah that is a good point and even though I have studied on the it industry for a good 4 years I didn't know you could do that, haha, you learn something new everyday. Cheers for your help DoPo and Snowy too.
