port forwarding HELP

This is possibly the most bizarre thing that has happened to me on a computer, which is saying a lot considering how many times a computer has gone crazy on me.

I run a minecraft server for myself and some friends. It's not a public server or anything, strictly private. I've had it running for a few months and it's always been fine, never had any trouble with it.

That was, until this morning. I have no idea what's happened, but for some reason it is no longer working. When I checked the usual website I use (http://www.yougetsignal.com) to check the port (25565), it said it was closed.

I've checked my router and computer firewall, and the port is still open on both (TCP and UDP). We were using the server last night and it was fine. Nothing has changed on my computer since last night, I haven't installed any new software or hardware, I haven't downloaded anything at all, but now it simply will not work.

Being a complete amateur when it comes to any network issues, I have no idea what's going on, or how i'm meant to fix it. Has anyone else had trouble like this before and know what im meant to do?

(If it helps, i have a Belkin router, im running windows 7, and my anti virus is AVG)

Look here: http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/60/~/configuring-port-forwarding

This should help you get it setup. It's not exactly logical that it would suddenly be closed though.

Double-check to make sure the port number and protocol is correct. If in doubt, remove the existing entry and make a new one.

On the Windows end, you can try to fully reset your Windows Firewall.

Win7:
Type firewall.cpl in Start, Run dialog.
Click the Restore Defaults link

XP:
Type firewall.cpl in Start, Run dialog.
Click the Advanced tab.
Click the Restore Defaults button.
Click Yes to continue when you see this dialog

Did this and nothing has changed. I also double checked the ports on the firewall and they are still open.

One interesting thing that may be causing the problem is this thing that i found. When i opened command prompt and typed in ipconfig to check my IPv4, the text underneath the ethernet adapter local area connection said this:

"Tunnel Adapter Isatap.{5811BB0D-3962-42BA-B90D-7D63F612C1A9}:
Media State........... Disconnected
Connection Specific DNS Suffix.:"

I have no idea what any of this means and i've never paid too much attention to this before but I don't think its supposed to say disconnected :S

Any idea what that means?

Isatap is part of the IPv6/IPv4 connectivity, unless you actually have an IPv6 address it doesn't do a thing. So it is normal that it is disconnected. Also called Teredo in other Windowses.

No idea what else it could be without having physical access to the PC, but hope you can find it.

Did you already try setting up a new Minecraft server from scratch, just to rule that out?

Don't really see how that could help. All minecraft servers use the port 25565, and if i can't get that open then it will never work :(

Well windows will sometimes kick in it's retardo firewall and start blocking shit at random, so be sure to disable all that.
And routers can go nuts sometimes and just clog up, usually it's best to reset or just pull the plug so it clears all temporary memory.

Just reconfirmed: The ports are definitely open on both my router and my firewall. There is no solid reason why they should not be recognised as open, and yet for some reason they are not.

Have you forwarded the port on TCP and IP connections to your computer's LAN IP address on the router?

Yes, done that for both TCP and UDP ports.

You've stumped me then, I don't know what's gone on :S.
Lol join the club, neither I nor anyone else seems to understand exactly what has happened here.

Why cant computers just be straight forward for once? >.<

And now for the completely unprofessional and desperate move: I'm gonna turn off my router for roughly 15 minutes or so, as well as my PC, and hope to god something works when I turn it back on.

If that doesn't work, then I really dont know what will!

You could try going into your Minecraft server's configuration files (server.properties) and changing the port to soemthing else. I've got 2 servers running on my computer by doing this, just change it to 25566 (and update your port forwarding on your router) and see if it works.

Also, does your computer (the actual computer, not the router) have a static local IP address? This isn't the same as your interenet connection's address, it's your computer's address on your home network and should look something like 192.168.1.1 . (Sorry if you know all that, just covering the basics) If your computer isn't set up to use a static address and something, anything (even a friend's phone or a neighbor's laptop) is talking to your router over wifi your router could be forwarding the signal to the wrong device.

Not so, you can define the port in the server config file as the poster above described.
I am going to hereby declare that this person is a genius.

It worked, the server is back!! :D

note to self... port number 25565 is condemned...

Thanks everyone for the help provided! I don't know why this occured, im only glad that its fixxed now. You all deserve cookies, or beer depending on preference :p

To be fair, the poster above me pointed it out first. :)

Still strange that it just closed itself, though. Something to do with the ISP perhaps?
