Hello fellow Escapists, I have a question I would like to pose to you today. I travel a lot and I sometimes read serious literature, but more often than not its just comics.

The one problem I have is I don't like dragging them across the state with me, they often end up damaged which makes me sad. That being said, I was wondering if their was some sort of eReader that is capable of displaying color for reading comics. I understand that most comics are in CBR format, so obviously the eReader would have to be able to display that file. Thanks in advance for any help.

The iPad has a comic and manga store, and from what I've heard it's very high quality and has a fairly big range. Problem with that though is iPads are hella expensive.
Yeah I was looking for something a little bit cheaper seeing as how all I want to do is read comics.

Alright new questions, I think I may have found one. Its an eReader that has color, but does anyone know if it can display comic books, the CBR files. Heres a link.

Cdisplay or ifranview work pretty well and can run from a usb key on any laptop. different versions exist for various os's. they're what I use, at least.

Is this what you were looking for?

edit - they open cbr, cbz, rar and zip files too.

I was hoping for something a little bit cheaper, like in the range of 100$.

You just needed to take look at the specifications on the website for that company. It does not appear to support CBR format. But CBR is just an archive, you could just extract everything and put them on there as individual images. Provided of course the image viewer on that ebook does not suck horribly.

I guess you could try getting your mitts on a $100 laptop or something http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OLPC_XO-1 but I don't know the specs or capabilities of this thing.

it looks like some e-readers are gonna become cheaper in the near future, but I don't know if they would be any good as comic readers in particular.

software for comic reading ain't a problem, but it looks like you're gonna have ta dish out the readies for any piece of kit to store and run what you want to read.

Personally I'd go for a cheap / second hand laptop.
The age is pretty unimportant as most comic display programs will run, and I am sure a 100 dollars will get you something you can use.

I use a great free reader called Comic Rack.

As an aside, if you are looking at another way to read comics, a lot of comics can be downloaded as pdf files too, and at a sqeeze you can get them old school in jpg format, which most things can display nowdays. (or perhaps even converted to)

If you have a DS, I would suggest CBDS. You'll need an R4 or some other flash card to use it. The only problem I have is that 2 page spreads are almost impossible to read.

I believe there's a reader for the PSP; I have some friends that used to read comics that way. I use my iPad and my iPhone, along with the ComiXology app. It's been pretty reliable and I tend to have good luck checking out free previews to find what I like.
