How is Bastion not even one of the nominees for best story? Honestly, I'm not usually one to drop my pants for independent games, but while Portal 2 was certainly fun and witty and all that, it never reduced me to tears the way Bastion did.

It's a goofy, child-oriented little game that only achieves cuteness.
That is not always a bad thing, least of all in Portal.

Hmmm, rewards seem fair enough to me. There's nothing that screams "wrong" to me on that list, though there are a couple of winners I havn't heard of (Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet + Monstermind).

Best voice actor: Mark Hamill for the Joker. Mark Hamill... Was he a voice in Gears of War? Wikipedia here I come!

Edit: Wasn't in Gears. It was a danged Quiz on the escapist that tricked me into thinking he might have been.

I aint even mad. As far as I can tell from what games I've played or are otherwise familiar with the winners are completely deserving (though I can't speak for all of them). I'm just glad it didn't end up as another Skyrim awards for best Skyrim of the year...it's already won more than it deserves.

Yup I really value their opinion.

Eh, I think the only reason Skyrim didn't win anything was because there seems to be a limited amount of awards. I know it was said earlier, but they give genre awards for action and such, but none for RPG's or puzzles or anything like that?

Anyways, if I feel that anything got snubbed, I think it was LA Noire. And while I loved Portal 2, I'm not sure if Best Story is the right award for it. Great presentation and tone, but I'm not so sure on story. I mean, the story just basically boils down to "You wake up back in Aperature, meet up with a new AI to take out Glados, take out Glados but are betrayed, work with Glados to take down new AI in control".

Oh, and Best Debut Game as Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet and Rayman Origins for Art Achievement? Really? Really?

Portal 2 definitely deserved to win, it was a brilliant albeit short game.

I'm more glad Skyrim didn't win anything though. Game was alright, but not deserving to win in any of the categories nominated and DEFINITELY not worthy of GotY in my eyes. When I have to play the game in bursts due to bugs, glitches, and crashes there is clearly something wrong with the game...

Skyrim didn't win in the music department? What!? How could they insult the great Jeremy Soule!?
Let's be honest here, all Skyrim had going for it in that department was what they used in that trailer, and nothing else.

I'm much more surprised by the Portal 2 "storytelling" achievement. Really, on what fucking planet?
I'm not surprised at all. Portal 2 is in many cases perfect storytelling/direction.

The story is presented WHILE you play, not while you're in pause-mode. The story can be as deep or as shallow as you want, since most of it is presented in background audio or background images (the paintings for example). The story is a PERFECT example of how to tell an interesting story, while NOT breaking up gameplay.

And the ending is nothing short of perfect too.

Spoilering this just in case anyone havent played it yet: Since I cant get the tag to work I do it like this and feel like a noob :\

SPOILER BELOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

The moment when you are directed upwards to look at the moon is probably the best single moment of game direction in the history of gaming. Maybe even the best direction moment period. I did NOT see the end coming, and the realization of what I was doing as the moon appeared and I simply instinctivly fired the gun the only "available" spot was staggering to me.

It was almost as if time slowed down, I fired, my mind went "why am I shooting at...waaaiiit a mi...oooooomg!!!!"

SPOILER FINISHED!!!!!!!!!!!
The result was just pure distilled perfection. My hat is off to Valve and their skills.
Pretty much what this guy said, Valve's games, especially Portal 2, can be as deep or as shallow as you want to make them to be.

Also, yeah, Skyrim definitively deserved that music award :/ Jeremy Soule is a f*ing genius.

And Artistic direction to Rayman Origins. While that game definitively deserved it, it doesn't susprise me it won that award after watching it's competition. Or rather a lack thereof.

Maybe the British didn't like Bastion as much because the narrator sounds so American? That's the category I disagree with most.

Skyrim should have been nominated for audio achievement (and not nominated for best story). In fact I just went back to check their 2008 awards, and see they did not nominate Fallout 3 for audio achievement either. They should get their ears checked.

Dear god, someone doesn't agree with me on something that I care about, it must be because they are stupid.

Anyway, I don't think there were enough categories in this award show, nothing about puzzles really at all.

It's also stunning to see so many triple A games in many categories they don't belong, like the artsy ones.

What about Rayman winning artistic achievement is hard to believe? That game is absolutely gorgeous.

I didn't play it, but saw some videos of it. Personally, I just found the style of Bastion to be far more appealing.

Fair choices all around, though Bastion not getting any actual love is criminal, especially for either its Audio or Story. It's not like there's a category for "most time spent in a game due to Skinner Box setup and enormous worlds incurring hundreds of hours per playthrough", which Skyrim would have easily taken. Everything Skyrim was nominated for something else did better. A thoroughly good affair, beaten by mostly different games in each category where that title had a "great" rating over Skyrim's "pretty good".

Really, though, shame about Bastion not getting more love. The one game someone like Stephen Fry doesn't narrate, and the Brits don't like it. Tsk.
