I love the people using this as a weapon against Valve. It's hilarious, because it's stupid. It'd be different if this was like Broken Steel or something, but it's just cosmetic crap, like gamer pics or avatar items.

Yeah, it's exactly what they've been doing with Team Fortress 2 for the past few years.

There's random bouts of bitching about TF2's store, but I think it's as close to a non-issue as possible. LittleBigPlanet 2 dropped with four or five DLCs that let you customize your characters. Virtually all of their DLC (save for three or four level packs) are just costumes for your sack-boy. It's just a bit of fun. If you feel like pimping out your avatar, you buy them... if you don't, it's easy enough to ignore it.

Well in this case they didn't remove anything essential to enjoying the product, just a bunch of cosmetic shit that frankly only big girly-men would care about. It's essentially make-up, expensive make up at that.

I mean what would having extra skins show about you? That you EARNED them by completing challenges? That you CREATED them yourself. No. Just that you flashed your cash and bought them, that you are a stooge with more money that sense.

I wouldn't be surprised if it became deeply unpopular to ever join a Portal 2 co-op lobby with premium skins, for fear of being griefed.

I just think a little change in strategy would go a long way. There are a couple of games on the PS3 whose developer decided that for the first 2 weeks to 1 month, the dlc that it provided was free. These were not really amazing stuff they were giving away however it was refreshing change of pace.Later they would start charging for the dlc and the quality of the dlc improved as well giving an incentive to buy it. It's the act of immediately trying to get more money out of people who just spent a considerable amount just to get the game, that I find distasteful.

I didn't buy the game. I'm angry on behalf of the poor souls who got conned out of what they bought. To my mind, you'd be justified in pirating the hell out of all that 'extra content' that is priced completely disproportionately to the game you paid for.

Listen, seriously pepole you did not get conned out of anything. The customization of in game characters was not even a selling point last time i checked. Really they added something, yes you are getting angry over the possibilities of EXTRAS!

Even with the co-op campaign that's not nearly enough content to justify the price.

Being three times larger than Portal means nothing, It takes me less than an hour and a half to finish the campaign in that one. That's not me trying to be cocky or anything, the first one is very short, but it was also cheap.

It depends on how you play. If you rush through everything, thereby missing dialogue and other hidden things, you can probably finish it in 3 - 4 hours. I'm standing around listening to the dialogue and looking for hidden things, and so far it's taken me about 6 hours to be about 80% done. Since people can play through Portal 1 in an hour this is still 3x longer.

My friend and I kill each other on purpose a lot on co-op so I don't think I can give a realistic time estimate.

I can assure you I did not rush. I got stuck on a couple puzzles and found quiet a few of the secrets. Of course the length will vary depending on the player, but I still think there's too little single player content to justify the price.

Its funny how Valve is taking all the comments as "haters" .. on Metacritic. But all of them make perfectly valid points on the game. Valve has alot to answer for using EA's tactics with this game. It doesn't feel like a valve release.

What? Almost every single comment I read on metacritic today made it blatantly obvious that they didn't even play the game. The only valid complaint is game length, but that's subjective.

The only reason that this "didn't feel like a valve release" is because there's a lot of people complaining while the silent majority keep on playing. There are 98,000 people currently playing Portal 2 on steam alone.

Day 1 DLC?

If you had the time to make it, then it ought to be included on the sixty fucking dollar disc they just released. Of course it's going to piss people off when you need to pay more money for all the functionality that should have been released at the store.

I want unlockables and expansion packs back, not fucking DLC. It's more of a headache than it's worth.

Of course I didn't, but since when does not 100% a linear game justify a short campaign? I certainly didn't hear people apply that sort of logic to, for example, Modern Warfare 2's single player.

The issue is that this is all day 1 DLC. The TF2 stuff was added later, that's excusable. This isn't.

Are you kidding? TF2 is WORSE than portal 2 in this respect! At least the items in Portal 2 are just cosmetic things, whereas in TF2 a newbie could pay money to get an in-game leg up over a newbie who didn't utilise the store. Hence getting an advantage over another player for paying money, it's like Battlefield Play 4 Free only much much more forgiving to standard players. I'm almost a vet of TF2, imagine how bad it'd be being a newbie now with soooo much crap to unlock.

Anyway I don't get the hate for DLC released with the game. Sure the original purpose of DLC was to provide a means to release new content without having to build it all up into an expansion pack but the format has evolved into a means of providing extra content for the more diehard fans who are willing to pay for it.

Tell me, if Portal 2 had no DLC would you say that the game is incomplete? Sure some people might say "Hey it'd be cool if we could customise our robots" but really no one would be screaming that Valve ripped them off for not including silly hats. You paid $40/$45/$60 or whatever for Portal 2, sans most of the stupid hats. The other stuff is extra goodies that you do not need. It's not as if they're releasing Day 1 DLC for a new bloody set of test chambers or anything! That would be annoying.

This on the other hand is just a minor nuisance that's provoking an inordinately loud response in some people who grudgingly handed over their cash for the game and think that somehow entitles them to own every bit of Portal 2 paraphernalia in existence.

When I bought Portal 2, I expected Single Player and I expected Co-Op, I did not expect there to be cosmetic hats, so I did not buy the game expecting them to be there. When you bought Portal 2, was you told that you get the hats for free? No? Then you are not entitled to the hats, if you want the hats you must pay for the hats because the hats were not included within the price of the game! I've said 'hats' so many fucking times today that the word has lot all meaning. Seriously people, all this rage over... HATS! Yes, thats right, not missing levels, not having to pay for Co-Op all this hurting and anger over... wait for it... HATS!

You could say this is a stepping stone onto more, like cutting out levels and stuff, but be honest with yourself. You know that will never happen. This is Valve we are talking about here. I don't get why the world is ending when Valve pulls this, but let's say when Blizzard pulled this move, micro-transactions the majority of the community went 'Meh' and said 'I'm so (not) buying that' and we all got on with our lives. Why are all so hurt by them trying to make money, most likely so they can pump the extra cash into their next project.

Actually, that's not true.
The costume packs on this page:

Are only available via download. That is, about 150 costumes. Probably more.

Yes, LBP1 and 2 contained costumes made by Media Molecule, but if you wanted, say, Capcom costumes, or Sonic and Friends, you had to buy it.
Since I didn't want to pay, I didn't. Easy as pie.

As for the topic of Portal 2 micro transactions, don't care, won't buy. Problem solved for me.
