With the release of Portal 2 coming up on us quickly, I want to know, will it be a masterpiece or a flop?
It's going to be tricky to beat the main campaign of the first game:
We know that GLADoS is a murderess computer.
We know (for the most part) what happened to the staff of Aperture Science.
We know what happens when the credits roll.

Can Valve really recreate the constant mystery that was Portal? The creepy side rooms, empty labs and attack robots have all been used...
now what?

What do you think?

They can make it a good game, providing they don't do that stupid thing that happens far too often in sequels of:

- Taking the most popular part of the first game and overselling it to the point that it makes you want to vomit.
- Deciding to take it in a completely different direction to the point that the only similarity between the games is the name.

So as long as they keep the fun and quirky puzzle solving but don't rely entirly on the portal gun to drive the game it'll be fine. Or they could do none of the above and still make it rubbish. It might be completely random.

It'd be difficult to make two games with that much amazingness, Portal inspired so many memes and it was rare you found someone that didn't like it.
I bet Portal 2 will be really good, but I don't think it'll match the original

Well with how confined the original is, I'd expect to see something connecting this to the grand scheme of things. Something in the way of setting up our expectations for what is onboard the Borealis or a confirmation of GLaDOS' knowledge of the situation outside (I.E how much she really knows or is capable of knowing).

I wouldn't expect a great deal of information like that to be given away though, especially with no news on EP3 and considering valve's history with giving very small, cryptic puzzles for people to work out.

But, TLDR; if it has some connecting story, fresh gameplay mechanics and good level design it should do well.

You thought GLADos WASN'T evil at some point? Hearing her voice put me on the edge.
OT: Yes. There are plenty of games that can recreate something like that, even without the mystery.

I don't slander or praise a game I haven't played.

Guess I will wait for it to come out.

Better find a way to pass the time...

I'll wait until its out rather than make a pointlessly snap judgement on the minor bits of information we've been told. Also: Portal, mystery? Really?

It didn't make much difference if you played Half Life 1 before playing Half Life 2. You still really wouldn't know too much of what's going on based on your knowledge of the first game. I think Valve can do that again for this.

Valve have yet to release a bad game, so my money is on it´s going to be (ATLEAST) good.

It will be epic.

I predict "a slightly disappointing singleplayer campaign" and "amazing co-op" with a final average score of 9.5.

This is Valve we're talking about. The guys who design, play test, and edit their games to hell. They actually get outside opinion on the stuff beforehand, so unlike Fable, their games don't normally have those elements that somebody obviously got way too excited about. I think the chances of sequelitis are low given their process.

I'm expecting to see a thirty second ZP review that consists of forks being jammed into eyeballs- yes, I have very high hopes for Portal 2. When I first heard the rumors of it, I was actually very against it, but everything I've seen, trailer and supplemental information-wise, has completely changed my mind. The new mechanics look awesome, the Enrichment Center is catering to one of my single greatest loves (well, it already was, I love abandoned/clinical looking places, as well as severely overgrown buildings), the humor seems to be intact, they're abandoning the cake and Cube, and to top it all off, more songs.

And I'm rather happy to see them keep Chell, and I am quite excited to see how the whole 'centuries later' angle works out, it'll either involve the G-Man, GLaDOS lying (as usual), or.. I dunno, Time Lords.

It's made by Valve and it has a story. Therefore, I believe it will be great. The Left 4 Dead series and Team Fortress 2 are both good, but since they lack a story, at least a Valve-level story, I find them boring. What would make the game truly great would be if it connected directly into Half-Life (Episode) 3.

Chell causes some sort of time distortion. Game ends with her laying on her back looking up, much like Portal did, then someone asks, "Oh my God, are you okay?" Alyx suddenly appears and looks at the player. She turns her head and shouts, "Gordon, over here!" Gordon looks down at the player. Cut to black.

Perfect ending.

Didn't you know you use the portals to build your farm it is a new concept we call portalfarmvill vs zombies.

After finishing the game I say it was epic, however the T-rex at the end turning out to be your love interest felt forced. I did the love the fight though.

Well the initial magic is gone with sequels, that's to be expected, we already know the story of the first one so that wonder of mystery cannot come back.
What they can do however is expand on it, add more and move the story forward.

And what I've seen sofar they wont disappoint, it will probably be less mystery centered and focus on fun and platforming.

Portal 1 was epic, it was a once off great that cant be topped. Valve have set them selves a huge target to top it.

They can't beat an ending song that was so epic.

I just hope in the new one they have another great song by Jonathan Coulton.

There's a few reasons why it won't be a flop. First and formost... it's valve, not a fanboy but they know what they are doing when it comes to portal. Number 2 you have a gun that shoots portals... do you not remember it? Its awsome!
