Portal 2 Leaps to Lego

An effort to turn Portal 2 into a real-life Lego set is looking for help.

Are you familiar with Lego Cuusoo? It's kind of like Thunderdome for small plastic bricks, except that instead of two minifigs entering and one minifig leaving, budding Lego designers submit their ideas to the site to be voted on by the public. Cuusoo projects with at least 10,000 supporters are reviewed by Lego on a quarterly basis, with those passing muster having a chance to become official Lego products. That's how the Minecraft Lego [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/114534-Mojang-Making-Official-Minecraft-Legos] ball got rolling, and now a four-man team of Lego fans is hoping that its Portal 2 concept will have the same sort of luck.

The Portal 2 Lego Cuusoo project features a GlaDOS Chamber set, complete with Chell and Wheatley minifigs, a potato and a fully-articulated GlaDOS, a configurable Modular Testing Chamber with three Sentry Turret minifigs and a hidden Ratman chamber, and the Portal Puzzle Board Game, which brings the challenge of solving Portal test chambers into the real world. The concepts for all three sets are great, particularly the turret minifigs, which look like they'd be worth the price of admission all by themselves.

The idea was originally rejected by the Lego people because it's based on an FPS, which presumably violates the company's insistence that all sets, regardless of their intended "age target," must also be suitable for its core audience of children aged 6 to 11. But after a more thorough review of the material, minds were changed and the project was allowed to be put up for consideration. It even earned a very Portal-like official congratulations from Lego for achieving 5000 supporters - half of the required total - in just a couple of days.

"You did a wonderful job of capturing the Portal environment and characters with your renderings in this project. We also like how you have presented several possible concepts for sets that capture the essence of the game," Lego wrote [http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/18258#FeedbackTab]. "Note that as a part of our move to streamline the review process, we will not be producing concept models for projects before the review. However, at that time we will serve cake."

Hitting 10,000 supporters is all but inevitable, but that's no guarantee that the Portal 2 Lego set will be put into production. A Firefly design on Cuusoo hit the magic mark in May but Lego, despite calling it "a beautiful model and a skilled rendition of the beloved Serenity," lego.cuusoo.com [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/117127-Browncoats-Drive-New-Firefly-Lego-Set-Toward-Production-UPDATED].

This was a-

Too obvious? Oh, alright then.

I could see this one maybe going all the way. Firefly was way too cult/teen-to-adult to ever get by, but Portal is pleasantly family friendly and non-violent.

Yes please, and I'll take them all.

My love of Legos and Portal have finally come together, this is glorious.

Am I the only one that thought "OMG Chell and the turrets are just too cute I MUST HAVE THEM!"?

The rest is amazing, too, but I would gladly interrupt my 10-years long abstinance from Lego products just to buy those 2... O_O

Everything's getting lego'd apparently.
I'd much rather have proper replicas or turrets and cubes actually.

They better not stop this from happening because of the source material not being appropriate for kids. The game is E10+ and is a puzzle game. Star Wars: Episode III was more violent and kid inappropriate and got a PG-13 rating and had tons of LEGO sets. So did the first two Spider-Man movies. I'm going to be really pissed if they stop this for that reason. I haven't been into legos for years, this is what they would need to get me back into them.

Yeah, think of all the movie IP's that have been Lego'd, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Batman... "Not child friendly" isn't an excuse. I can see their point a little bit with Firefly, as well as really not having the biggest market if we're being honest with ourselves. Portal is a perfect fit though.

Problem: How will the Aperture Science Handheld Portal device work? Did they create actual dimensional gates for our toys to leap through?

They already shut down the Serenity and Shaun of the Dead sets that already got enough support. I bet lego will think of some bullshit excuse to not make this either.

I like the concept of lego cusoo, but lego doesn't take it seriously.

Lego, how could Portal not be for kids?

It is only about a girl trying to dodge acid pits, bullet spewing turrets, and many other hazards set up by a psycho computer who literally is getting high from your suffering. :D

You can actually make that happen [https://www.gamingheads.com/index.php?option=com_myphp&Itemid=3&product=100] for $300.

I highly doubt that LEGO is still releasing new sets from the original Star Wars trilogy solely for kids.
Me thinks particularly nerdy adults probably make up a large portion of LEGO's audience. Especially when it comes to sets based off of "geek" properties like Star Wars or DC and Marvel.

Yeah, I think a Portal set would fit in just fine in LEGO's stable.

Even though I grew up loving Lego, this Lego-fication of everything is just getting insane. What ever happened to plain old Lego bricks? Why does everything have to be themed?

Also, why is there any need to raise funds to produce Lego products? The company sells cheap plastic for insanely high prices. It's a very profitable company - so why does anybody feel the need to make donations?
