What's not intuitive about Source SDK?
Step 1: Place cubes
Step 2: Apply textures
Step 3: Make a hollow cube for the skybox and place a spawn
Step 4: Press F9

Well, the triggers can be a bit of a pain sometimes, but most of the things are explained on the Valve developers' wiki. And you should always put in at least one light so it doesn't look crappy.

Portal 2 Level Editor Coming Next Month

Valve is rolling out the Portal 2 "Perpetual Testing Initiative" in May.

Have you played Portal 2 [http://www.amazon.com/Portal-2-Pc/dp/B002I0JIQW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1335489096&sr=8-3] yet? I haven't but apparently it's pretty good, so in what I'm assuming is an effort to boost its profile among mainstream gamers and give sales a bit of a goose, Valve is releasing the Perpetual Testing Initiative DLC on May 8 at no charge.

The Perpetual Testing Initiative features a "simplified puzzle maker" that will let players create all-new levels from within the game and then share them via the Steam Workshop, where their fellow gamers can browse, play and vote on them. Word of the new "custom test chambers" first came to light in October 2011, when it was revealed [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/113790-Next-Portal-2-DLC-Lets-Players-Make-Custom-Test-Chambers] that Valve was working on a simplified map editor that would let players create their own single-player and co-op Portal 2 levels. Intrepid Portal fans can create their own levels now using the Source Developers Kit, but it's apparently not the most intuitive process in the world; the PTI will presumably make Portal 2 level design less painful for people who don't actually want to be full-time game designers.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the promised support for co-op map making will make it. The word from Odessa Cubbage himself [via the Steam forums [http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2670223]] is that in order to get it out as quickly as possible, it won't be included in the initial release of the Perpetual Testing Initiative but will instead be added in a future update.

I assume this will only be for PC? Or will a 360/PS3 version come out as well?
Let me put it to you this way:Will Microsoft and Sony EVER accept free DLC?

There you have it.
It's only for PC/Steam.

Also, shouldn't this be a Level Creator instead of Level Editor? you aren't really editing a pre-existant level, you are building from scratch...just saying.

Regardless, I'm looking forward to this.
Sony already have, many times before. It's only Microsoft that seems to hate free DLC

Valve Pre-Release: "Hey guys! We're adding Steamworks to the PS3 so it'll be a lot easier to get out updates and DLC! Yay!"

Valve Post-Release: "LOL just kidding! Enjoy you're one piece of DLC losers!

I can't wait to start making test chambers and making my friends test them. Now I just need to start planning out what I am going to do.

I'd be excited for this if this was available for the PS3 version as well. :(

Not the workshop itself but the ability to play other people's levels.

If this with co-op support had gone live at release I'd still be playing portal 2 with my friends to this day. I'd have paid full price for the game (rather than waiting for a steam %50 discount) and twice as any of my friends would also own the game.

Valve really missed out a great opportunity here. The speed at which I whipped through the co-op with my friends was the biggest let down for me for this game which otherwise was outstanding in every other regard.

Time to see how long it takes someone to make world 1-1. I'm betting less then a full day.

I'm not really excited. Maybe I'm just jaded from working with other editors and editors have become mundane or maybe its just because I really don't give a crap about playing other people's levels. I'm just very Meh on the whole thing.

There's been a "level editor" out for a while now in the form of the SDK. This is just a simplified in-game editor because, to be frank, the Source SDK is an outdated pile of horseshit and no layman could possibly comprehend the techno-babble wherin with about three IT degrees and a lot of blind luck.

Actually Sony has. The first DLC for Portal was free for PS3 players.
...and Xbox 360 players, too. In a very rare case of Microsoft actually releasing DLC pack content for free (I assume Valve bent their arm a bit considering PS3 users got it for free and it'd just look bad on Microsoft to be the one platform on which you had to pay for the DLC)

Wow good spot! You maybe on to something there. I was too busy wondering what the guy with the pixelated screen was doing >.>

On topic

The level editor looks fantastic and looks really easy to pick up and use. I may have to try my hand at making some brain twisting test chambers :D

It's a good thing to let players make their own maps. Those hardcores will love to spend their time to make an almost impossible puzzle. I actually liked the single player puzzles. Challenging enough to work the brain, but not to hard to kill the pacing.

Brilliant! If it goes well, this will extend the lifetime considerably. I think the creme de la creme in this will be when professional map makers release additional maps for co-op.

Does it make people jealous that I was one of the first beta testers for this thing? Unfortunately, the editor did crash when it became too complex and didn't transfer them to another PC similar to cloud saves. Hopefully that's fixed so I can continue on that Vertigo map.

I just read the Wikipedia page, and I think you'll be able to play the levels on consoles but not make your own.

That trailer was golden. Nice to see Portal still going strong. I zoomed through the campaigns and haven't touched them since, and although I don't have enough time to sit down and make my own levels, I wouldn't mind firing it up again to see what the community spits out.

Hopefully not all just samey uninspired crap.
