My hype-gland has been forcefully removed by Gothic 4, Dragon Age 2, Crysis 2 to the point where I'm afraid to look forward to Mass Effect 3. :O And I admit to having thought up the same points as you have.. I guess we'll see.

I actually can't get hyped for it, because I refuse to be fooled into thinking it'll come out until it's actually out.

Why? It's valve. Just...valve.

I'm a tad worried about it, seeing as how Valve produced a Gamestop-specific commercial for a stupid pre-order bonus. If that's not being a shill I don't know what is.

I don't think the comparison to Bioshock 2 is valid though. BS2 was produced by an entirely different dev team from the start, as the devs of BS1 (Irrational) refused to take part in it. Portal on the other hand is being produced by the same people afaik.

Still, the idea of "BIGGER, BETTER, AND MULTIPLAYER!" always scares me.

Also the "PS3 version is the best version" (it is certainly the best value for your money) has me worried that at long last Valve will abandon PC users for more profitable consoles like everyone else has done.

Just because Portal was short and it was good doesn't mean that making a longer version of Portal will be bad. I found myself playing the advanced levels and the challenge modes (like how few portals can you use to beat a level) for a lot longer than it actually took me to finish the game. If you can't stomach that much Portal than I guess it is a problem, but I'm looking forward to more playtime. Anyway we still don't know exactly how long it will be. I've logged two days worth of play on Mass Effect 2, I think I can handle 6 or 8 hours of Portal.

As for the humor I guess that one is up in the air. From what I've seen in the trailers it still sounds funny so I can't say I'm too worried. I think the games biggest problem is going to be that people just freaked out about Portal and more than a few have declared it one of the best games ever. I think what hit so hard about it was that it came almost out of nowhere. Everyone just picked up the Orange Box wanting to play Half-Life or Team Fortress and this little bonus game that came along with it turned out to be amazing. Portal 2 has a whole bunch of hype, and as time has shown us, hype just means a lot of people becomee either overoptimistic or horribly cynical.

In my opinion Bioshock 2 had a worse story but better gameplay than the original.

Under this logic it would actually make sense to hope that Portal 2 turns out to be like Bioshock 2, as Portal has no story to make worse.

History says that Valve always makes good, well designed games. When they make a sequel, they always improve and refine and tons of new content. Chances are extremely good that the same thing will happen for Portal 2.

Will it be different enough for you? Well...it's gonna have Portals. You will go in an orange one and come out a blue one. If that's not unique enough for you, then your not going to like it. Otherwise buying it is a pretty safe bet.

Oh absolutely. Actually, I'm going to say that Bioshocks 2 story is as good, maybe even a little better, then the original. People just don't like it because the world of Rapture is just no longer as big a surprise.

From the previews it doesn't look like it's going to be a Bioshock 2. I'm not saying it will be excellent and we will all weep in its glory, but I think that if it's bad it'll be more along the lines of 'not meeting our expectations' as oppose to just being plain bad.

A lot of the humour in the first Portal came from the fact that you didn't know GladOS was supposed to be batshit insane for a while. Now that we do know that a bit of the edge is off.

There are a lot of things that are left unexplained. I'm interested to see how long the game will be, though, I am not at all worried about the humor. Everything with GlaDOS in the preview trailers was what I expected and not laugh out loud funny, but clever and dark kind of funny.

That and the sheer incompetence and strange ethics of Cave Johnson and Aperture Labs in the Co-Op mode and trailers have me dying of laughter.
I really can't wait for the 19th

In fact I think Portal 2 is going to turn out like Bio-Shock 2 being a mediocre cash in at best.
I don't think it can live up to the original. I'm afraid the humor will be forced and if it is funny it will start another annoying internet meme ("The cake is a lie" is fucking annoying and everyone knows it).

Another concern is about length of the game. Portal 1 was about a 2-4 hours long game which like Yahtzee said is a good length, it prevents it form outstaying its welcome. So How will making Portal longer be to its benefit?

I honestly want to know if others share my concerns. I brought my concerns up to a good friend and he struck me upside the head and told me to NEVER blaspheme against Portal again.

Edited for Spelling, I had just woken up when I first posted this, Sorry.
What are you basing these concerns on?

Ummmmm...... How Bio-Shock 2 turned out.
What does that have to do with how Portal 2 may turn out?

Both Bio-Shock 1 and Portal 1 are considered to be some of the greatest games of all time.
Both had great writing and redefined the FPS genre and neither game needed a sequel.
But Bio-Shock got a sequel and what was the first thing they added? Multiplayer.
Now what was one of the first thing announced for Portal 2?.......... Would anyone in the class like to answer?

I just wanted to let you know that your avatar's headbanging was uncannily in sync with my music. It was awesome.

OT: Yeah, I can't say I'm free of concerns, either. I'm not entirely sure how they're going to keep the Single player from feeling drawn out, but on the other hand, it's Valve. They are good at what they do.

What concerns me more is the heavy marketing of the co-op aspect, since none of my friends are interested in the game, I might have to go online for that. Which isn't really as fun.

Now, Escapist, I know you're going to be tempted to quote me and tell me that my friends are shit, but please, control yourselves.

Well there is some stuff you are overlooking. I thought Portal 1 was too short, but I got it for free with Orange Box so I was like oh what's this "Portal" meh might as well give it a try. By the time I finished it, I was like holy crap EPIC!

I also then now went through the entire game again just to find all the extra puzzels and challenges (the radios and the cameras from walls). Also did all the challenge puzzels. The reason behind Yahtzee saying it would outstay its welcome is due to the mechanics of the puzzels (I'm not him but from what I understood this was his logic behind it).

Portal 2 is going to have a whole new set of puzzle mechanics as well as the same basics that made Portal 1 so great. On top of that it has a seperate co-op campaign with some other mechanics that aren't in the SP that are just designed for the co-op.

Overall I think everyone will find that the variety in puzzle designs and the shear mass of puzzle mechanics/elements will mean the game will be fun from start to finish.

I especially can't wait for the co-op, it's double as long as Portal 1 and yeah all those new mechanics, the full time will be used up so to speak as to never bore you as it will always feel fresh.

OK, that was pretty cool. But to be fair, there are a few key differences:
1. Bioshock 2 was made by a different developer then the first game.
2. Portal is a game that is much more compatible with a multiplayer mode. Hell, there were times in the first game when I was wishing I had another person there to help.

But, as I said in my above post, I do have concerns.

Testing. My above post seems to consist of a quote and nothing else, so I'm seeing if posting again will somehow fix it.

EDIT: Nope. *sigh* The fuck, Escapist? The fuck?

My immediate thoughts on reading the first post:

There are no concerns here. You have said 'maybe they won't make it as good' and that is all you've said. Concerned about the humor? Look at the advertisements they've done so far, they're all bloody hilarious. Concerned that the gameplay will not be as fun? WHY?? You've seen none of it!!

Pessimists get out, thanks.

Also, I really wouldn't mind if it was longer than Portal. The only thing to watch out for when you make a longer game is that it doesn't get too thinly spread.

The thing that I'm concerned about is that it seems really centered on co-op, and I will definitely be playing the game alone.
That's just a merketing thing. Atlas and P-Body are much better mascots than Chell, don't you think? Granted, GLaDOS may be a better mascot, but they're being very coy about her role in it.

It's Valve. I don't have a single worry... Except one.

THE NEW PORTAL SONG! There has to be a new one and it has to be at least on par with the first one. This is the only thing I worry about.

Look I'm not saying that its definitely going to be bad, I'm just saying I have some serious concerns, and I don't want to be disappointed again (like with BioShock 2)
History tends to repeat itself, and even good game makers can fuck up.
I'll still probably get Portal 2 (simply on the grounds of all the cool shit you get with it on PS3) Just not on day one. On that day I shall be busy with MORTAL KOMBAT

I agree with the risk of humor issues (and Portal 1 was probably the funniest game in a while if ever), but Portal 1 was only 1+1/2 hour long with only 1-3 puzzles that get people stuck. Many of us wished it was longer, so was not a "good length" and it barely had a stay to welcome. Games from Valve are usually 8 hours and the only game I feel has ever outstayed it's welcome by being good was Assassin's Creed 2 (and maybe Splinter Cell Conviction by appearing good and having enough replayability to make you realise it isn't really all that).

I think they're hyping the co-op because it's a radically new feature and the bots make much better mascots than the all-but-anonymous Chell does.
