Uh, why not use paper money. All it is is bartering. Trading one thing for another. I'm sure peices of paper, like smokes, can be used to purchase things after the Apocolyse (assuming life still exists) If all else fails, monopoly!!!
Paper money is only valuable because a central or private banks insures it's value. In the case of the United States, paper money is only valuable because a central, state owned reserve says it's valuable. As soon as that state/reserve is gone, the money has no value beyond the paper it's written on.
So then how did smokes in prison earn their value?
Nicotine is addictive, calming, and provides value in-of-itself, as opposed to money that provides value outside-of-itself.

I'm gonna toss my hat on the barter wagon, as a currency kind of needs something valuable to back it up (ie, gold for money now) and I don't think gold will be as important in the wasteland as water or food or weapons/ammo.

Um...I guess it's more like
1. "I'll trade you 10 years of slavery for your protection"
2. "I will trade you my body for your food
3. *Bullet through the head*
Agreed.

A lot of goods will be measured by consumption time. It's not so much x bananas for a suit or armour, but more like x days of supplies for a suit of armour. Economies have a habit of working themselves out.

I'd imagine cigarettes for some reason. That seems to happen a lot after wars when people are reduced to a barter system.

Since I'm not a smoker, that works out great for me.
And then all the cigrattes go stale in a couple months even the unopened packs.

One of the things that had me wondering most of the time playing fallout 3. Why the hell would people be smoking 200 year old cigs, that makes me wanna barf just thinking about it.

other than trading a favor or service for goods, I really couldn't say. There is a saying that everybody has their price so, I guess it all depends on who you're trading with. Some people will want seeds, others will want children, others will want Nuka-Cola Quantum. It all depends I guess

Bullets, clean water, canned food, sexual favours (of course rape is always gonna be an option for some, but in generall people will enjoy it if their sexual partner is a willing rather than an unwilling participant), working batteries, fuel and probably antibiotics in sealed containers.

I think these necessities will become the most prevalent form of currency which will be viable pretty much everywhere for some time in the post-apocalyptic society.

Favours - You do a service for a settlement, you get a bit of kudos with the town, you can then try to ride that fame for as much stuff as you can before you wear out your welcome and then you have to do something else.

And, of course, bartering goods for goods would also work.

Raw materials would probably hold the most value in such a society. Cloth (thread, skins etc), plastics + synthetics, metal + minerals and glass. These thing hold great value as they can be made into other items needed for survival. There would be a fair bit of this stuff around but finding intact, good quality pieces would be difficult.

I terms of actual currency, it would be very difficult to have something to like the money we know because without order it would mean very little. Gold and silver perhaps, as people everywhere would still view them as 'rare'.

Okay, bullets come in different sizes and etc, saying 'bullets' as a currency is liked saying money is the currency now, you got the american dollar, the euro...

It'd probably be a bartering system, but if for some reason 'the man' lives (like in apocalypse lane) he might try to keep the old money around... wouldn't work though.

I truly hate agreeing with the masses, but barter really would prevail until society gets its roots down. Of course, once it does it would have to be something that is somewhat rare but still attainable by most everyone through effort. I hope it turns out to be fuzzy dice, just to see a rich person's wallet.

The idea of money is that it is somewhat permanent. That would be the same as using cookies for money. Sure, you might be rich right now, but they what happens when you want a cookie? Do you want to be one... eh... cookie poorer?
