Posting with nothing to say?

in the thread i recently put up titled "does this seem fair to you?" someone decided to respond to my three questions with "meh, meh, and meh". Maybe it's just me but that is intensely annoying, there is no quicker way to kill a conversation than filling a spot and having nothing to say. Isn't the point to have a discussion?

(I realize he was probably just saying that to be witty, but seriously?)

Yes. Indeed.

EDIT: Okay, I had my fun. People should certainly discuss, and not just post one or two words. Forums are for discussing, so people should certainly discuss.

It's funny... I get what you're saying, but I totally don't have anything interesting to say so... Yes

Well it appears people just want to boost their post count because I saw your thread and the majority of answers were people just stating "I don't know" - which isn't very helpful in your case.

It's inevitable, every once in a while on in the internet someone just wants to get their post count up. When this happens to you, which it will, just shrug it off, no need to make a whole thread just to voice your disagreement. *cough* *cough*

It is lame and annoying. I've actually trained myself to scan the thread and skip over stuff like that. I don't even notice it anymore. But it would be nice if all the posts were thoughtful.

I find those posts to be extremely annoying as well, but like any troll, feeding them (by acknowledging their existence) just serves to make them more bold and continue doing it. Also, in way of observation, the mods here seem to frown on making a thread to talk about another thread. Just an FYI for future refrence.

Oh, if only the world were such a perfect place, no stupid posts and self righteous bigots.

M... only kidding :).
Most of the time I hate one word answers but the post the op is refering to was most definately a joke...I think.

i dont really notice it that much either, but shouldn't it be against the rules, like purposefully trying to derail the thread or something?

Eh, people get into the habit of responding regardless of whether they have anything to say. I try to only post if it'll add something to the conversation, but I know I'm guilty of this sometimes, too.

Then again, this even happens in face to face conversations, where it's even less useful -- online, if you don't post no one knows you're listening.

People just wanna add their oppinion whether they have one or not. Unless the hread calls for a simple yes/no answer, people shouldn't post unless they have something at least remotely intelligent, relevant or funny thing to say.

Doing that sometimes brings the wrath of the mods here, which is both a good and a bad thing. Good because it keeps a lot of clutter out of threads, bad because like any mod wrath it stifles your ability to speak your mind.
