I just want to say that I think Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle Cars might be something you've overlooked if you have a PS3, and you should try the demo.
The single player challenges are reasonably fun, but are good training for how to play the game in multiplayer. The split-screen and online multiplayer games are awesome. There's currently a lag issue in some games, but Psyonix (makers of Onslaught in UT2k4) say the patch will address that and other issues.

There's no AI assistance on the controls, so you really have to learn how to handle the cars well. This is a long-term replayability game. Anyway, the demo's free; what have you got to lose?
