I can't even remember the last time I had to go search for an update or patch for a PC game. Do we have to download updates yes, but so does my sons 360. I built my current PC in 2010 and I did not buy the most expensive components at the time. I am still playing everything that's out there at max settings. When I started PC gaming in 93 yes there was some headaches but seriously I think that modern PC games don't have the same issues and are 100% better in terms of them working at the click of a mouse. I prefer PC over console because I can do many more things with it than just games. Yes it might be more than a console but it can do a lot more for that money.
As someone who also primarily played on the PC around that time I agree. After repeated software and hardware problems, along with the fact that my parents weren't upgrading the computer anymore, I switched to the console.
Up until like 4-5 years ago I actually still believed gaming on the PC was like the way it was back then and that the prices for the hardware upgrades were not worth it. However, during college, I got a laptop that could run some current gen games on low settings and decide to dabble in PC gaming again. Thanks to Steam, the internet, and a friend of mine I discovered that PC gaming is not nearly as much of a headache as it used to be.
Two weeks I ago I got my first gaming PC and while I'll still be using consoles for exclusives, I'm switching back to the PC as my primary platform (assuming all goes well). For me its not that consoles have gotten worse so much as PCs have gotten better to the point that their Pros outweigh the Cons.
However, I still maintain the stance that consoles, as far as the hardware issues are concerned, are more convenient. Even after reading and watching multiple tutorials on how to build a PC I still opted to buy one from retail simply because I don't feel confident enough to build one.
The truth is that I feel I'll make some stupid mistake like short out one of the components or crack the motherboard. Even those good with computers aren't immune to novice mistakes. I have a friend who is a PC enthusiast and a few years ago he made two very stupid mistakes. He wanted to upgrade the RAM on his Desktop, simple enough right? Well apparently his first mistake was that he bought RAM for a laptop. Now instead of exchanging it at the store he decide to just give the RAM to me since my laptop could use it (I guess he just had money to burn). However after installing it my laptop would not boot up. Apparently, the second mistake he made was that he forgot to take out the laptop battery and ended up shorting out the RAM when he installed it (at least I think that's what happened).
I feel like I can upgrade the components, but building one from scratch just still seems overwhelming.
