Power leveling verses Content

With the recent events that have unfolded on the Karak Eight Peaks server on Warhammer Online, we have seen a breed of hardcore gamers that would put some Korean MMOs to shame. For those that are unaware you can check here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.73039] but the basic summary is that a small hardcore group of gamers power levelled with each other so that within 2 weeks of WAR going live, they had attained or nearly attained maxed out characters. This allowed them to capitalise on their greater numbers in the end game PvP content letting them conquer the Order capital city, Altdorf. This then fucks up a lot for lower levels, who can now no longer registar guilds, buy mounts, visit the banks, etc.

The other thing about this, is the fact that so early in the game, for a hardcore group on one side to power level, leaves an already outnumbered faction, underpowered as well. While eventually things will even out. Should the devs force a balance somehow? Or lock cities so they can?t be capped unless a certain number of players are online able to defend?

While that?s the event that sparked my interest in this, I wonder, how many people here would actually enjoy such a thing? Grinding to the extent of excluding most, if not all, content. Making no social interaction with other players, simply so you can hit top level first?

As a gamer, me preference is that I value content, I'm an RPG whore who loves to learn every ounce of knowledge that can be gained, both in single and multiplayer RPGs. While I agree the end game content is awesome stuff (In closed beta, they just chucked everyone in at level 30+) I'm in no hurry to get their, and want to enjoy the journey. There is so much to do and explore in the WAR world, some of which gives awesome titles, others give you an average but unique looking piece of armour.

So what?s everyone else?s view on this? Are you a hardcore MMO machine who can pump out a max level in any MMO in under a week? Or are you the type to randomly go for a walk off a cliff cause you think you saw something unique and cool at the bottom?

(Feel free to talk about how other MMOs had similar problems in their early stages, I've never really played much else apart from a 10 day trial of WoW, Eve Online, and CoH/V)

Power Levelers make baby jesus cry. But I can see the appeal. I don't mind power levelers if they use their skilsl responsibly, to improve the experiance of others, offer their services aquiring items or tanking or defending capitals.

But they don't. They just gank lower levels. Hurray.

I tried power levelling once, and realised I couldn't see the forest for the trees. I was playing a game to the point where it wasn't fun, so I stopped grinding and went to go kill a whole bunch of ogres. I don't see the appeal of playing a game for the sole purpose of getting a number next to your name higher.

I consider myself a "hardcore average" player, in that I do my very best to be as good as I can at any given game, while stubbornly refusing to grind or metagame. I want to win, I want to compete, but I also want to play and enjoy the game as its creators intended it.

Incidentally, this is why I don't really play MMOs much.

If you can powerlevel, that means the game has grind and therefore sucks. End of story.

If you're some weird creature that somehow enjoys burning away their lives endlessly repeating the same one click action in order to prove to yourself that you're so much better than that other guy who "only" spends 50 hours a week in-game grinding, then I can't say I feel any sort of sympathy. I fully support any method to bypass or destroy grinding that do not involve third party programs.

Also, that Warhammer fiasco happened because the developers didn't even bother testing the damn game... Or I doubt they wouldn't have noticed the backdoor was OPEN for enemies... /facepalm.

Totally agree with that. Games should be played for fun and metagaming just turns it into a pointless exercise in who has the least life. I think Mario Kart is one of the best examples on how metagaming has ruined it for people playing for "fun".

As for the endgame not being tested... I partially agree. It was tested, but while their were lots and lots of players about. It could have been that no destruction tried the back door, so didnt see it do that. Or that the few people that did, didnt report it so they could use it like it is now. Or the most likely one, that they toned it down as it was "too hard" in the beta, but didnt test the toned down version :-/
