Powercuts/power outages?

Ok, so as you all know, powercuts are annoying enough at the best of times. Well, how about at 2am in the morning?..

I was sitting browsing the escapist forums, when all of a sudden "Ping". Off goes the power. Everything goes dark. Now, I'm scared of the dark. I don't know why, it just unnerves me. So you can probably guess, my mind started spinning. whats happened? Am I going to be murdered? Is it the cold messing the electrics about? Are the Robot-Ninja-Penguins onto me already?..So as you do, I searched for a torch. now when you think torch (Flashlight for you Americans), you think a fairly large object. Well, I have possibly the smallest torch ever and I had to find it in complete darkness. So, naturally, I thought what can I generate light with?

*Just thought I'd tell you, power went out again just as I was typing...*

Well, I switched to my laptop screen ( Broken, to give me a bit of light.) and promptly found my phone. Using my phones light I found the shell of the torch and then proceeded to find batteries for it...after successfully getting my torch to work ( Much more difficult than you might have thought ) I found every bit of lighting I could: Gameboy's, DS's, PSP's...all were switched on and placed around my room.

Now you may have thought this was a bit of an overkill, as such, but I'm honestly terrified of the dark, when I'm alone at least.


So, I ask you! What was your most creative way of producing light in a powercut and do you ever freak out?

No, I don't freak out. I just finally accept it's probably time to go to sleep.

Haha, I would normally agree...if it wasn't for my complete screwed sleep cycle!!

EDIT: Also, this is a sporadic powercut...It's been on and off about 5 times in the last 40 or so minutes!!

Haha, I would normally agree...if it wasn't for my complete screwed sleep cycle!!

Haha fair enough. And yeah, that would get annoying fast.

Waaay more than annoying! I'm feeling kinda lucky at the moment as the powers stayed on for a while...so hoping it'll stay on from now! although, I have now assembled every bit of lighting equipment in my house next to me! haha

The exact reason my "God-box" (ask for it by name) is tied to a 1200VA rated Uninterruptable Power Supply.

'Cuz when the lights go out, that's the BEST time to be gaming.

It is?! Have you ever had a haircut in complete darkness...I think you'll describe that as extreme? Or painful? Depends on your viewpoint I suppose?

To be fair, "powercuts" isn't a particularly cosmopolitan term, in the U.S. we call them "power outages" or "blackouts". There's also a national salon/barber chain called SuperCuts. Hence the haircut joke.

I don't particularly mind them. Not afraid of the dark and the heavy light pollution where I live means it rarely gets too dark if just our grid goes off. I usually use candles, I have a couple flashlights for camping/power outages.

If the OP is complaining about the power being cut at what is probably the best time possible then he just needs to spend less time on his PC.

I wouldn't normally complain and to be fair I'm not. I'm just stating how creeped out I got by it and whether or not other people maybe have a slight panic when all the lights go out...in the middle of the night...if there awake...

That sounds very quaint.

Most mild phobias can be overcome with increased exposure. If you let yourself sit around in the dark more often it'll probably go away. After a couple of times of not being axe murdered, it'll lose its excitement and become dull. Suddenly you'll be sitting there, realizing that you can't get online or watch T.V. and at least being axe murdered would be something to do.

I like to use power outages as a time to catch up on my reading.
