Relationship mechanics. They work for a game like the sims where there's not much else to do, or mass effect, where the girls aren't high maintenance (I think.). However, in a game like GTA, I don't want to have to take my cousin to a restaurant every 10 minutes. In a game like fable, I don't want to have to stop questing for a whole hour to keep my wife happy (this is more from what i've heard about that mechanic). It's annoying and on the whole useless. I prefer going nuts and killing shit. That's just me. Also I like base jumping, riding roller coasters, and doing anything that gives me an adrenaline rush.
