For Dead Space, when the game was released, that suit was availible for dowload for free, I downloaded it, even though I have yet to play it.

If the games good enough for me to buy on release from a store, I will quite likely get the collectors edition. Otherwise I usually wait until it is cheaper and purchase it from ebay.
Also I quite like pre-ordering from the store, as it allows me to pay off a bit at a time, and quite often I only have 20% of the game left to pay when I go pick it up. I agree that a 48 hour pickup plan sucks big time, I buy mine from gametraders and they quite often keep games over 2 weeks for me if I ask.

If I was going to buy the game anyway, I'd take the bonuses. In the UK's main game store, aptly named 'GAME', you get reward points, you make them by spending money, and you can spend them in store, and for pre-ordering you get triple points. So here it's always worth it.
GAME is run by Gamestop. They couldn't run the system they do in the states because it is illegal in the UK, so they run that.

I pre-ordered Killzone 2 and apparently I'll get an exclusive PS3 theme.

I noticed this too, but it doesn't really bother me.

some bonusus they offer are pretty sweet, like the early Killzone 2 demo, even if the demo won't install for whatever reason for me, even after downloading it twice which took about 2 weeks on my internet.

And some are just laughable, like the weapon for COD: WAW and all the songs for GH: World Tour

But in others, like Fable 2 and Far Cry 2, where I get in game offline content, thats pretty sweet, considering I can't play multiplayer in most games
