Your thoughts?

Gears of War 2 had Gold Weapons

ODST had Sergeant Major Johnson,

Assassin's creed II has an entire level locked.

How far is too far for locking on-disc content from us because we don't jump on a pre-order for a game that hasn't even been reviewed yet?

Developers can give people whatever they want for pre-ordering. There is no going to far, in my opinion.

EDIT: Actually there is an exception to that. I think developers can give away any content in a pre-order so long as that content doesn't give one player an unfair advantage over other players online.

Yeah, I really don't care about showing off some shiny item to other people. I prefer to get a concept art book. I always find those to be far more interesting.

I can understand minor aesthetic things that don't make a major change to the over all game play such as the golden weapon texture in Gears of War 2, the Flaming Warthogs from Halo Wars, that kinda stuff.

Or a code that isn't a digital download but an actual input code for the game that can be shared such as plane unlocks for HAWX.

You already said it, buy it before the reviews come out. Notice something like Borderlands had in game guns, yet MW2 had a goofy drawing. MW2 had the people on their knees before it can out so IW didn't have to put forward anything special. (yes, I know, hummers, bikes, blah, blah, blah. Those a car salesmen tricks, it's all true but the highest number ticket has it and nobody got it.)

I don't preorder because only Gamestop usually does it. I hate Gamestop with a passion

Although some games only have trivial changes such as a different skin, maybe the odd map here or there, which usually becomes DLC later, but when they take parts of the game OUT, THAT is too far.

"New from Gamestop, Adventures in Pre-ordering! In order to play the game, you must pre-order two months before hand to maybe get the game within the same month. Then enter the 64-digit code exactly right, the one that is printed at the bottom of your receipt that is in size 1 font(for your security). After that is all said and done, you get to play level one. once you finished the level, you will get sent to a secret website where you can pre-order level 2. wash, rinse, and repeat."

In all seriousness, they should draw the line at A (i.e. One, 1) unobtainable item or item customizations that has little or no difference on the games experience. Having entire levels that may or may not be released as DLC kinda like a punch to the balls to me.

I'd prefer if they released the bonus stuff as a free download after the game has been out for a little while.

By the way Sgt. Johnson isn't that speacil in ODST. I pre-ordered and all he is is the rookie with Johnson's head. Complete with no dialogue!

I only preorder stuff if I really want it, like Batman Arkham Asylum or Assassin's Creed II.

But, some of their stuff is just crap. It used to be just worthless little novelty items like a figure or a messenger bag, but now, they lock out content of the game just for pre order purposes and that sucks balls.

Well, since L4D2 and MW2 were my first pre-orders EVER and the latter was the first console game I bought new in literally ages, I'm not too keen. I get almost all my games used a year or two after they come out at 20% original price and am not really into pre-ordering unless I'm really sold on the game. But as far as bonus content goes, I'd prefer things that have little-to-no effect in game, more things like behind-the-scenes videos (which go swiftly to YouTube) or physical collectables (which can be sold at garage sales).

Little nic nacs are nice, although some things like when they advertised "Working NVG" with the prestige edition of MW2, but they're really just generic childrens' toys... I dunno. Backstab much?

I think cosmetic items in-game are acceptable, as long as they're unlocked a year or so later so all players can have the whole game on the disc available rather than pieces locked for eternity.

I'm all for it as long as it doesn't give someone who pre-ordered it an advantage over the others who didn't.

If they lock something that they advertised in trailers I consider that unfair. This happened recently when I bought forza 3 they locked the aston martin dbs and several other cool cars that I was looking forward to driving and featured in the trailer.
Pre-orders and limited addition games should be stuff like minifigures or a factsheet or something that doesn't lock any game content.

I am beginning to feel it is a bit of a scam. Especially with this pre order from this store and get this but pre order from that store and get that. Or you could buy it on the day it is launched and get nothing. Or you could pre order and still get nothing because half the employees will give the codes away to friends who didn't pre order. And then after a month or 2 we non priviledged might get a chance to buy it. *All the while we have to download some useless code so that those who are priviledged can still be priviledged and our non priviledgedness doesn't affect them.

*refering to Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 Juggernaught pre order. If you didn't get a code (which I did so this is not out of bitterness) you have to download something from the marketplace so your lack of Juggernaught doesn't affect me.

The Street Fighter 4 Collectors Edition was pretty hefty in terms of Pre-order content, so i enjoyed that a lot.
And pre-ordering is a incentive to get you to buy the game more to be honest, i mean look at L4D2, people are angry about the Bill Hat nonsense when they dont realize people dont buy the game for just a virtual item, its a incentive.
