All of my games are used. I got Mass Effect, Bioshock, and Assign's Creed for less the price of a brand new game.
I usually get new because you can't be sure what your getting will work with pre-owned games, and i have had some that don't, but recently I have been able to get some extra discounts through a friend for pre-owned games, so I might be buying them a bit more often.
I live by rentals and second-hand goods. If you're really looking to save money you can try buying directly from other users. This has its ups and downs:
1. The advantage is that the buyer and the seller are both in a financial advantage. The seller gets more than he would at a game store, and the buyer gets it cheaper than at the game store.
2. The disadvantages are that it takes some coordinating and snooping around advertisements to find the stuff you want, and that noboy guarantees you that the whole thing will work. You're unlikely to get your money back if you get a faulty product.
As with all things, it depends on your financial situation. I'd be thrilled if I had enough money to buy every game brand new and prefferably with the Collector's Edition. However, since I'm flat broke most of the time, cheap is the way for me...

I would go for pre-owned if there was one available. Only once in recent memory has something not worked and then the shop replaced it. Some places really need to increase their quality control on traded things though. Some stuff I've seen people try to trade and buy were butchered.
I'd certainly go for pre-owned games as well, after checking the disk integrity etc. Unfortunately, there is no shop that sells pre-owned games where I live, so it's either new or a rental. I stick with rentals most of the time, unless I am convinced that I will spend more than 100 hours on a game AND will replay it soon, in which case I just buy it full price. Rentals work pretty well around here, since there are video stores with pretty much every title out there, and they have the option to pay a 20E per month subscription and always have up to 3 games and/or movies in your possession at all times.
I very rarely buy brand new. If it's it's not pre-owned it's in a sale. Games are too damned expensive to be forking out for something that:
A: might suck the fat one and / or be over with in a weekend.
B: will drop in price with a month of release.

It is shocking what a shop will pass off on you. It shouldn't have even been accepted in the first place, never mind sold back to someone. I've had a few discs that were obviously damaged. I took back a copy of San Andreas yesterday that was knackered. No map inlay. Knackered box and the disc was a disgrace. They had another copy, but I still had to get the inlay from the returned disc to replace the one I'd swapped it for.Garzo said:

I often buy games from Gamefly. Whether they're ACTUALLY used or not, they always charge $50 US maximum if the game is brand new, but generally do $40 or lower. More obscure games are like $10.
If I can't buy a game from Gamefly, I go to eBay. I pretty much never buy games retail. I haven't done that in years and I can't think of why I would ever want or need to, since I don't want to pay $60 for a game when it comes out brand new since I've never played it before and don't know if it will even be good.

About 75% of all games I've ever purchased were used ones. Where I grew up there was (and still is) only one little shop that not only stocks brand-new stuff, but also buys and sells used games, DVDs, consoles etc. - works like a charm. Whenever I'm on vacation at home I make at least one stop there. Functional games at great prices, and it's a hell of a lot better to pump money into vast businesses like MediaMarkt (not that I don't like them, it's just that they have enough money as it is).
Btw, they even have great prices on new games. I was prepared to pay another whooping 70 euros for GoW2 since it didn't get released in Germany and I usually have to order from Austria. But lo and behold, the guy at the shop had some copies anyway - for 49 euros. Beat that, big game retailers! ^^

Depends on the price of the game if it's new. For example, I went in to buy Final Fantasy X a couple days after it came out. New copies sold for like $60-$70 depending on where you went, but I saw a pre-owned copy for only $40. Since the game was new anyways I just bought the pre-owned copy and saved myself $20. I usually buy it new though 'cause most of the time the new copies are only $5-$10 more
For PC I buy new, largely because I use Steam almost exclusively for PC gaming.
On consoles I haven't bought a new game since Halo 2 (on release day), after that I am NEVER paying full whack for a console game...

I haven't bought a brand new game for sometime. The release prices are just too expensive for me to afford. The shop I get them from are very good when it comes to returning faulty games, so it's just a logical thing to do. I've only ever had problems with one disc, which they replaced with no questions asked.
I buy pre-owned all the time. For newer games, it can save you as much as $30 or $40 a title. Plus I trade in any titles I know I won't be playing any more. And if you ever get the urge to play some older generation games, pre-owned is about your only option. I've never had an issue with a game not working, and most shops guarantee their games to work. So really, there's no reason not to buy a $15 used game when it's selling for $40 new.
