I went into this movie with high hopes - Rodriguez being a fantastic action director promising to make an 'Aliens' for 'Predator', what could go wrong?
For the first half hour.. nothing, A tense opening sequence, quick character establishment, good set up of place and an awesome opening battle left me gagging for more.
But after that, no more interesting aliens were introduced and the predators for the most part sit on the sidelines. We're left with nothing more than the characters talking to one another, and a few action sequences which were far too short to be satisfactory. For example Lawrence Fishburne's character is introduced as a hard-core survivor, living through ten seasons and having killed 'two or three' predators. Can't wait to see him go face to face with one, what happens when he does? it kills him. immediately. No fight, it just shoots him and he dies. The only satisfactory fight I found was the sword duel, this was tense and incredibly well filmed, far better than the final duel, which is drawn out but without real structure or seeing anything new: he confounds the predators heat vision, cripples it with traps and beats it to death. incredible.

aside from the lack of action the movie has a profound lack of predators, infrequent use of the thermal images means we don't get the sense of 'being hunted' which made the others so tense, and their new toys barely see any screen time - the UAV is only really deployed once, the 'pred hounds' see one battle and even the new suits are barely seen. And to make things more infuriating, no explanation at all is given to the new predators, Fishburne begins to illuminate but provides nothing solid. Conversely to the first movie, knowing nothing about the hunters does not add anything to the tension.

In short the movie is too focussed around human characters, but it gets worse. The interesting characters are all killed off, leaving only the uber-macho-no backstory-captain bland played by Adrien Brody, and the irritatingly goody-goody portrayed by Alice Braga. Admittedly the doctor also survives, but is killed as soon as he actually reveals who he is, there is an opening for an incredibly unsettling sequence of torture on the paralysed sniper, but this is vetoed before a single cut is made. I'm not bloodthirsty, but if you want to create a character like that, let him do SOMETHING before killing him off. As it is we're left with the two most boring characters standing victorious and looking mournfully into the middle distance as the end credits roll in, truly groundbreaking.

To sum up in short - Predators promised to be a good action movie, the trailers and director interviews suggest a good old fashioned bloodbath, but instead we recieve a human movie, with a light dashing of sci-fi monsters who serve to do no more than move the human plot along.

Aplogies for the poor writing, I just had to get this off my chest.

i liked it, except one thing. When they look up at the sky for the first time and see the other planets, there is one that is literally in the atmosphere of the planet they are on. Now im no scientist, but wouldnt that cause the planets to pull each other apart, since they are being pulled by each other's gravity?

true point, also, none of the planets are visible when they're first under open sky.. then about ten minutes later the sky is full of them. were they all hiding?

I went to the film and had a great time. Twice- and everything made more sense seeing it the second time. Looking forward to seeing what angle Rodriguez is going to exploit in the inevitable sequel.

Trust me...if they could make a sequel to the first AVP- as bad as that movie was- they can definitely make a sequel to this one.

Due to my bad jetlag making it impossible to get to sleep I decided to go see Predators and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't the train-wreck that was Predator 2 and tips its hat so often to Predator that it might as well be called a "reboot". It also has the original Predator costume (albeit in dimished capacity) in it which is a HUGE plus in my books. So far so good. It's well shot and the original source material on the whole is treated with love and respect; something that the AvP films didn't do.

That said I still haven't figured out how much I did like it. Firstly it suffers from the problem that any Predator movie after the first does and that is abolish the whole Predator being the ultimate hunter that lives by a code of honour (except for one really well done duel) and rarely gives himself away. They deftly sidestep this issue by explaining that different Predator tribes hunt smaller Predators; but I find it hard to believe that the smaller, stealthy, honour-bound Predator "classic" is inferior to the larger, just show up and shoot everything Feral Predator. Classic Predator is just the definative Predator in looks if you ask me and with them bringing others in and making them all gimmicky it just reminds me of how much better Predator "classic" is. His appeal was due to his guerilla, hit and run, tactics. You never knew when he was going to show up and who was going down. These new Predators just seem more brutish and kill with less finesse.

And the end fight is sooooo weak. That's probably what bought the whole thing down for me. I really could have sum it up by using the word "anti-climactic", but it goes beyond that. Alien Resurrection Syndrome* I like to call it. Where you build to this big dramatic ending and it's over in a blink of an eye.

Until I make my own Predator fan movie where the Predator stalks and kills all of the humans and earns his right as an elite warrior I guess it is the best I can hope for in continuing the Predator legacy.

*FYI Alien Ressurection ran out of budget toward the end so the thrilling ending had to be scrapped in favour of a short, abrupt one.

Good review, personally I enjoyed nearly all of it and found it very good, but I can see why you didn't easily. Each to his own, I guess.

They only made a sequel because AVP made a shitload of money. Critically it was shite, but not as bad as the sequel, but both still made over a hundred million dollars each so I suppose the guys behind the movie didn't complain.
But yeah, Predators is making quite a good name critically and financially, so bring on Predators 2.... or Pr3dator... or.. Predatory? What'll they call it?

Predator 4? I know people like to pretend Predator 2 didn't happen (I don't know why. It's rubbish but I love it, it builds on the character of the Predators quite a lot I thought.) but I'm really hoping the next isn't called Predators 2.

As for the film, I really enjoyed it. It's not perfect, but it has some cool Predators, a Kill Bill-esque sword fight and Morpheus. It's pretty much the movie I was expecting it to be. All I want now is Predator 4 to be a bit more ambitious.

The movie looked okay, but it reminded me a lot of "Gantz" for those who are familiar with it which is odd because this is more of another straightforward "Deadliest Game" set up without anything quite that creative.

I guess the fact that "Gantz" disappointed me is one of the big reasons why I've been waiting for it to show up on Netflix or whatever.

there seem to be a lot of movies having these anti climactic fights now..
but more to the point, that sounds a damn good movie, could get some good clear insight to predator culture, plus actually have a movie where the guy who deserves to win, wins.

I quite like Predator 2, it isn't a great movie by any stretch of the imagination, but it's worth an idle watch at least.. as you say it has some good predator orientated sequences, and has Bill Paxton to make the human parts bearable. There are way worse films out there..
