When playing a shooter would you rather it resemble realistic combat, have arcade realism (call of duty), of something different all together?

I play a lot of Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 and I love it's combat, so I guess I like a somewhat more realistic mode of combat. I like that it takes very little to die, it encourages caution and forces one to develop strategies early on. It's because of the nature of it's gameplay that I find playing terrorist hunt one of the best co-op modes I've ever played. You actually need your buddies to watch your back. I'd much rather have a slower paced, patience-based game where you can't take more than a few bullets than a game where you can soak up and entire clip and still pound someone to death with the butt of your gun. I see the draw to that, though.

Are we talking about single or multiplayer?

Single player I'd probably just point at the Half-Life seiries and say pretty much that.

There are elements in both games' multiplayers that I think you could combine into the best multiplayer shooter ever.

For example one of the reasons I like MW2 multiplayer is that I get to choose my loadout when I spawn rather than having to run through a barrage of enemy fire just to find my favorite toys like you do in Halo. Halo at least doesn't have noob tubes though so we can forgive it for that...maybe

On the other hand, one of the reasons I like Halo is the sheild mechanic where unless you're a crack shot with a sniper rifle or a rocket launcher its going to take more than one bullet to take down your opponent rather than getting killed the instant a sliver of your torso slips into the enemy's crosshairs.

Going back to MW2, the killstreak mechanic is one of my favorite parts of gameplay but the fact that 90% of it ammounts to pressing a button on your d-pad then something happening maybe is really boring.

Then there is Halo which provides a plethora of pilotable vehicles scattered around the map with which to make much stuff go boom, and it is good. If this was somehow combined with the killstreak mechanic from MW2 (ex: 10 killstreak = get to pilot a scorpion tank) would make it a lot more interesting and eliminate the similar problem I have with the weapon system where you have to run through enemy fire to get to all the best toys.

But yeah, put all this together and you'd probably have the makings of the greatest Online Multiplayer FPS game ever. Thats just my thoughts though.

Complete realism would be a switch indeed. One shot from any angle and you fall/die.

But it might get boring after awhile, since you'd be very limited.

That said, I'm all out waiting for Gears of War 3. (Not that it's realistic, I just love how the enemies can be turned to chunks of meat with a blast of your grenade launcher/shotgun at close range.)

I am not really directing towards either, i feel games and their mechanics should be realised as a whole both in single player and multiplayer. But either is fine :D

sorry i don't understand how to quote properly :(

I dunno, I've enjoyed games of all types. My two favorite multiplayer games, for instance, are Quake and Red Orchestra, so that might tell you a bit about the breadth of my taste.

I don't play multiplayer often, however, and I prefer arcade-realism or realism in my offline shooters. Arcade-realism is usually more fun, although this likely has to do more with the ridiculously cumbersome control schemes that typify 'realistic' shooters than any sort of real preference.

You need a proper mix of shooters to accomodate your current mood. From shooters where you fall down if you get shot a few times and have to be damn sure to check your corners, to games where you're wearing armor, covered in shields and blowing up aliens with a giant gun that looks like it was designed to shoot 500 nerf darts because you are mankind's last hope.

Team Fortress 2 is zany and cartoony, for those that haven't played it, it's got a class based system that makes teamwork vital, and good old fashioned health bars.

I definitely prefer more silly in my shooters. Folks don't rage as much, and the lighter atmosphere makes the competition more enjoyable for me.
