Presenter Hints at Metroid for 3DS

UK media personality Jonathan Ross may have let the cat out of the bag - and the cat is Samus, and the bag is Nintendo's 3DS handheld.

On Wednesday, Jan. 19th, Nintendo is expected to detail the upcoming Western launch of its highly-anticipated 3DS handheld [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106200-Rumor-3DS-Details-Likely-On-January-19] with simultaneous events in Europe and North America. British television and radio personality Jonathan Ross will be hosting the European event, and he may have inadvertently given away one of Nintendo's announcements ahead of time.

In a Twitter exchange told Ross [http://ds.ign.com/articles/114/1144270p1.html] that while he "[didn't] expect [Ross] to spill anything," he had his "fingers crossed for Metroid." Ross wrote back, "I think you're going to be pleased then..."

The obvious thought is that Nintendo may be set to announce the long-thought-canceled Metroid Dread, an Intelligent Systems game originally developed for the DS that never saw release. However, Samus' DS debut - Metroid Prime: Hunters [http://www.amazon.com/Metroid-Prime-Hunters-Nintendo-DS/dp/B0009Z3MQ0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295285090&sr=8-1] - was generally well-received by critics and gamers alike, so it's not like the series hasn't proven its handheld worth already.

Of course, we won't know for certain until the event on Wednesday. Until then, all we have is speculation. But Metroid is one of Nintendo's flagship properties in recent years, so the thought that Samus might eventually be battling her way into the third dimension is hardly an unreasonable one.

Ross, by the way, may best be known to gamers for accidentally announcing Fable III [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/90076-Fable-III-Accidentally-Announced]. Perhaps the gaming industry ought to rethink its choice of presenters?

Indeed. And while they're at it, can we stop going on Jimmy Fallon all the time? He always looks and sounds so bored whenever he's got Reggie or the guys from Naughty Dog or anyone else with a video game on the show.

Not too much of a surprise, is it?

I mean, we all knew that Mario, Zelda and Metriod would be getting their own 3DS games.

No... NO! Metroid Prime Hunters wasn't as much fun as I hoped it was. The best part was the multiplayer. But the singleplayer and controls were bad!

Please make it a sidescroller, not a first person shooter.

As long as they aren't handing the continuity and character back to Team Ninja, I think it will be fine.

Seriously. No more contradictions in character please.

Not much of a surprise, it's a nintendo console after all. If it doesn't have ALL of the characters that nintendo has ever created, it doesn't exist. As long as it's not anything like other M, sounds great!

Oh yea!
I actually want another Hunters.
With better bosses and the awesome multiplayer.
Maybe even separate stories for the different hunters.

But either way, this makes me happy.

As long as Yoshio Sakamoto doesn't try to crowbar another one of his terrible stories into the franchise, I'll be interested.

Huh, Well, seeing as how the series has been completely raped by Sakamoto, I'm not looking forward to this.

Ok, i´m gonna say this once feel free to quote me on this

does anyone else feels the WII has less fun games to play than its portable counterparts?? i know of very few games that were geniunelly fun in the WII (that couldnt have being the same or better on Cube) and there are a LOT of games that are really worth your while in the DS, and with the recent Metroind: Other M on the WII being such a let down, i can only imagine the DS game that will be released is going to be one of the best on the series.

If Sakamoto has been secretly directing another Metroid this entire time that will be HILARIOUS. However, it might just be an off-hand comment by Ross that doesn't mean much. Seems a little too soon to announce another one though

I wonder if it'll be first person or not.

On the 2D side, it would almost undoubtedly be a great game and follow the age old formula for greatness.

If it's a FPS like Hunters, we could be looking at one of the first great 3D first person shooters.
