when a game prompts you to do this which button do you press on which controller and why?

I've never had a game tell me to press any button.
I guess I would press A (or X for PS3, or LMB for PC) because it's the button i already have my main button pushing digit on.

Usually either "start" or A, X, other most-used-button-in-game button. I don't know why. It just happens.

I usually hit start or A. Sometimes I hit the shoulder buttons to see if they'll work or not.

It is one of the rare times I throw my hand aimlessly at the keyboard. Usually press about 3 buttons in the around the H key per mash.

Or I click, which is more likely as I am expecting a menu.

In pretty much all cases the A button is getting my push. Sometimes, however, I like to press the Y button, just for the hell of it.

I usually press the mouse button. If the mouse button doesn't work, I press the space bar. Then I get myself prepared for an obvious crap-port.

I remember the first time I saw a "Press any key" screen. I read it correctly because if it meant there was a specific key labeled any, it would read "Press the any key"

Not hard to figure out, people.

I usually try clicking the left mouse button first. You'd be surprised how often that works.
