You know, I'd love it if it were playable on my netbook. Can you imagine the procrastination power of a ~six hour battery life netbook and Civ?
Are the system requirements announced? I'd think if anything, Civilization V could be scaled down to run with all the important features on a netbook.

Russ, Civ III? Favorite?

Ugh.

Civ2 4 life.

I cannot describe how excited I am for the end to the stack. I could never bring myself to overstack as many units as the computer would.

This is so, damned, exciting.

I don't mind the loss of religion, either. Always felt superfluous.

Nothing on Steam yet. Guess we'll have to wait a bit to find out...

I cannot wait for this. I am still in the middle of a game on civ 4 that I started over 2 years ago with myself (Great Britain) and Russia faced off along our border where no one can make significant gains. We both have over 700 tanks and untold men facing each other. I am too stuborn to not rule the entire world. Crafty Ruskies!

If it didn't require steam I'd order the most expensive version of the game available.

Unfortunately it does require steam so I won't be getting it :/.

I don't mind options, I don't like being forced to used unnecessary software though. But once it gets the invitable "9.99 dollars!" on steam I'll buy it I guess.

Alot of the stuff with combat you cite as changes were in Civ4
Like what? I've played a LOT of Civ 4, and none of the combat changes he talks about are in it.
I was thinking the same thing.. it appears to be nothing like CivIV in combat. Which I think could be a good thing. One thing as a defensive players, was having to Stack on cities, vs. just being able to build defenses for cities. I also hope they fix the "demand" system. I.E. you can't trade or even ask for tech, yet they can throw a demand at you and if you say no they pout and lose diplo points. I also never really got the spy thing in IV. Alas...

I like that the barbarian cities aren't something you automatically destroy anymore. However, Only being able to control one unit at a time will get very tedious, especially in the late game. Think of how long turns took in Civ IV when you could control your entire army as a single stack!

I think I might have grown out of the Civilization series, but... this seems like it will be pretty good. I guess, as I did with Civ4, I can wait a few years for expansions and a "complete" version to come out, and then I will consider picking this one up. Until then... other games await!

Oh God, I need this game so bad!!!
It's the only game I think I've ever actually wanted ever.
Civ IV with Fall from Heaven 2 or Rise of Mankind Mods is GODLY!
In fact, I think I'm just as excited for the Mods as I am for the game itself :)
I am more excited for the mods that will soon flood civfanatic forums then just the game itself. And also in a year to see wich mods will make it to the expansions.

The graphics card requirement is surprisingly high, and rules out most notebooks. But it looks like DirectX 11 is being used (although what the point of having tesselation is beyond me).

So that's Starcraft 2 in July and Civilization V in September. Two massive PC games in three months. Looks like this picture [http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/1689/1275834546391.jpg] might need some updating.
So let me get this straight... Descent, Fallout, Sacrifice, Planescape: Torment, MDK, and Baldur's Gate are on there, but not Freespace 2? Published by the same company and many gamers will argue it's a better quality game than many of the games on that list.

Wow, it sounds like many of the features that baffled me back when I tried Civ2 have been resolved (a Roman Legionnaire beats an iron-clad battleship? Buh?!), and the gameplay made much more accessible to, say, Total War veterans and more standard wargamers. Good show!

Well that rules out my laptop.
Having said that I won't use steam so that ruled me out straight away.

a bit sad that religion isnt in, but wow...

this is gonna be exceptional! seriously cant wait for this!

Do not fret, for religion in Civ5 has been revised, not removed.

OT: Nice preview, I can't wait to get my hands on this baby.
Actually, there's a quote from one of the designers that suggests it is gone:

Jon Shafer wrote:
We made some changes with religion. Because diplomacy is one of our focuses with Civ V, planning what an AI leader is thinking, how he's going to win the game, that wasn't something that was meshing very well with the religion system. In Civ IV, the religions were primary factors of who liked whom and who disliked whom. And that wasn't meshing very well with what we wanted to do, so we decided to move on without the religion system. But that's mainly because we wanted diplomacy to have more depth and not be so predictable. We wanted to make sure that the AI leaders were taking into account the same things as the player was taking into account. A player might not care what religion you're running, but they might care quite a bit if you attack one of their friends.
I certainly support anything that tightens up the diplomacy system, but I really liked the cultural effect of religion, not to mention the financial bonus once you got the wonder up!
