I was so psyched for this game i went out and bought empire and napoleon to get into the series.
But then steam died on me and hasn't worked properly since, and now I'm really sad. Although i suspect its my crappy Internets fault and not actually steam's.

seriously mate do yourself a favour and buy Rome total war pack with barabarians and alexander expansions. they are poor graphics but brilliant games, you will not regret it.

Totally agreed. And if the graphics hurt you too much, I suggest downloading the Roma Surrectum mod. Really brings the graphics up to scratch, as well as adding a tonne of gameplay elements.

As for Shogun 2, sounds like it's adopting elements from King Arthur The Roleplaying Wargame (the buff points on the map sound awfully similar) and Dawn of War II, which is no bad thing in my eyes. I'm more a singleplayer person, but with the focus on multiplayer I might give it a shot.

Dont know why everyone rated those games higher than Med2. Quite a few things about Rome game bothered me, like most spearmen had pikes that could hold of an entire army if you attacked it from the front, squalor in towns also was incredibly hard to get rid of, and archers could only shoot about 10 ft.

One of the few bigger budget Franchises left which deserve to be labeled "strategy" today (and the only one which incorporates a real time engine without being a stone/scissors/paper clickfest). I really hope they don't watered it down to much as some of the new features suggest. Empire was already a step in the wrong direction. Nevertheless Medieval and Rome especially with the corresponding mods like EB are still something i come back several times a year to enjoy the grand campaign.

Sounds good, but I want to keep a very tight hold on my excitement for a Total War game. Since Shogun, all of them have sounded significantly better on paper than they have in practice.

Sounds good but the whole RPG armour and cards thing sounds like a bad idea.

High ranking player with full set giving him amazing buffs vs new player with nothing

And opponents always playing the cards that dampen your main troop type. So everyone will just pick a balanced force so as not to be too weakened in their main area.

The title thing sounds great though, especially the dishonourable general part.

Looking forward to it but not really for the multiplayer

i would have rated med 2 higher, but in rome 2 it was possible to win the game (and see the whole map) with almost any faction, and i approached it historically, so your points didn't bother me becuase

a) pikes could hold off an entire army if they were daft enough to attack frontally
b) towns were dirty, and the further from the centre of your empire you got the dirtier and less obiedient they got and
c) archers could only shoot about 50 - 150 metres. you are thinking of the stereotypical anglo saxon archer, who could shoot out to 400 metres.

Some of these new features have me a bit worried, I play total war for a somewhat realistic RTS, these capturable buildings and retainers sound like a blatant "game" feature.

On the other hand the more complex siege battles intrigue me and I love the Feudal Japanese setting.

I'll reserve judgment untill I play it but it feels like they may be trying to make it too different from the preveous games for my liking,
Don't get me wrong it sounds like a good game but will it still be recognisably Total War?

Trap cards? The defensive scenario you described I like a lot. So happy a game takes a approach beyond "Mass ranged a choke, mass melee behind choke, wait for victory." So sick games making variations of this and making only two strategies for both attack and defense because the only two tactics to pick from are so damn effective.
