Simple question for you: Am I ignorant because I know the names of hardly any movie directors or bands? A lot of the time I'm looked down on by my peers because when it comes to bands, actors, and movie directors I'm entirely clueless. Honestly, it's just nothing I felt like I needed to know. I know which songs and movies I like, so does it really matter who directed/wrote/played in them? Lots of my friends could tell you every movie Quentin Tarantino has ever directed, and what their favorite scene of each of those movies is, but can't do basic algebra. Is this really what people my age are learning about? (I'm a high schooler, so that might explain it.) How is this even remotely noteworthy or useful information? Am I just entirely wrong in this regard? SHOULD I know all of these names and titles? Why?

Of course you aren't ignorant. They're meaningless people who are only idolized by obsessive people. It's no use to you unless you decide to go into a career that uses them constantly.

No. Unless you spend all your time watching the E network you have an excuse to be ignorant of these things. If someone is looking down upon you for lacking trivial knowledge of things that will be irrelevant and forgotten in a decade just tell them to go to hell. I pride myself on knowing far too much about comic books, but I don't get pissed off when someone displays ignorance on the topic, no matter how "main-stream" it happens to be.

Nope. I have no idea who the head of game developers are, who are the main political forces, (except the Presidential administration, and to that I know very little) sports giants, most celebrities, or intellectual people. No one cares

Both are important. I'm at the top of my class and can name every movie Quentin Tarantino has ever directed and my favorite scene from each (just the ones he fully directed though, I'm a bit limited of co-direct/acting/screenplays he did). He is my favorite director though, I don't bother to memorize this info for every movie or song that is released, which brings me to my point I guess.

Art is an important part of life. It is, in my opinion, one of the few things that separates us from animals. Intellect is another of those things. Both need to be fit into each persons priorities. This should include how much time to be spent on intellect, and should discern which art is worth spending your time on.

In high school I loved movies and I was the guy who could list of directors and actors like crazy. Math was not my strong suit and I stopped taking it in 11th and 12th grade. I'm now in the film industry and have gotten by by being extremely film literate...in short stop looking down on other people just because they aren't as skilled as you are in some areas because that's exactly what your complaining that they're doing to you.

You are not ignorant at all. Knowing some stuff could not hurt a bit as you would be able to discuss things with them, but otherwise its really up to you to find out if its something interesting to you. Do your own thing and if your friends don't like it, ask them about stuff that you like or only know.

Nope, not ignorant. Same here. You are not alone. Some people just take media too much to heart.
