Problems with Mass Effect

I am planing on purchasing Mass Effect 1 & 2 on Steam (for the P.C.). I currently have the demo for 2 and have run into problems running my game pad on it. Does Mass Effect prevent you from using a game pad (in favor of the keyboard) or is it just on the demo? Any help you can be will be appreciated.

To the best of my knowledge, Mass Effect 1 and 2 utilize just the keyboard for the PC version. It might be a bit unusual if you're used to the gamepad, but the game also gives you a lot more versatility and customization options with the keyboard.

If your using a game pad, can't you bind letters to the buttons through a 3rd party application?
