Hey, probably not the best place to post this, however my steam forums account is awaiting confirmation (until now I never saw a reason to register there), and other forums tend to be a lot less reliable than the Escapists; so with the large amount of TF2 players among the escapists posting community I decided to ask for help here.

Basically my issue is that ever since the day AFTER the Christmas 2010 update for the game was released (which on the day I was able to play) I haven't even been able to launch the game, initially the game would show the steam pop-up saying TF2 was launching, and then nothing would happen, however around 10 minutes ago I saw a TF2 update on steam which I downloaded. After the download when I attempt to start the game it will now reach and fully play the valve logo screen (the man's head with the valve in the back of it with the "dun dun dun" music) and then the game will disappear and I will be shown the steam ad's (the ones that normally only appear once a game is closed). Also, this is limited only to TF2, my other steam games are working fine.

I've already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game (and I've of coarse restarted my computer and the like) and all its updates, however this has had no affect.

I've no idea what to do and I could really use some advice, however I'm going to need some "dumbass-friendly" advice as I've never been the greatest when handling technical issues like this.

Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give me.

Delete all files in your steam folder except the steam executable and your steamapps folder. That's the catch-all fix for problems with steam.

Could be a coding error or something wrong with the Servers though I doubt the latter based on your description. If the problem persists and you see complaints from others then Valve will probably fix it themselves.

(Also I believe this falls under the Advice forum's jurisdiction)

Makes sense, but how would I do all that and would I lose my games? I ask because I'm an Australian and we pay for limited downloads on our Broadband before we get slowed down to dial-up speed, so redownloading all my games would cripple me until this time next month.

I'm an Aussie too, so I feel your pain. But since all games are kept within the steamapps folder, and that's one of the things you're not deleting, you'll be all good.

Sounds good, so can you tell me how, step by step? Like I said, I'm really stupid when it comes to this sort of thing.

1. Open up your steam folder. If you didn't specify any particular location, it will be within your Program Files folder.
2. Delete every file and folder in there except Steam.exe and the steamapps folder.
3. Run steam, it will re-download all necessary system files for you and everything should work fine from there.
