I was wondering whether or not the difference in price was worth the small advantages such as the L2 6mb cache(how useful is this for gaming exactly) in these two processors.

ANY Core 2 Duo processor is much better than a Pentium Dual Core, regardless of cache or clock speeds.

The E8500 is a very good dual core processor. Though purchasing a quad core will be more worth your money.
