Basically says most of it in the title, I am 9 hours from handing my last piece of work for the semester in(I'm a 3rd year History student at a Scottish university), however even now I find myself creating threads like this on the escapist, trying to watch cricket, and typing my essay only when sudden urges of guilt force me to.

So the question is simple, what is your advice, as escapists, for avoiding this in the next semester, and the rest of life?

EDIT: * I am aware of the irony of putting off my essay longer simply to ask for advice on how to put it off... It's like avoiding the procrasination workshops they run, because, 'I'll go next week' yup, I said it...*

2nd EDIT: I can't remove my internet connection as many of the services/sources I am working on are on it, this is the curse of modernistaion I tell you, THIS!!!

When i get assigned a project...i usually do about 5 minutes of it a day. and when the time rolls around for it to be done...it's extremely close to being finished.

Force yourself to work. Don't let yourself do anything else until you've reached a checkpoint in your work. Quit all applications besides the ones you have for working.
Good enough for me.

I'm just kidding. Ignore the clock. Never say, "I'll do it at this time." Because you will keep pushing it farther and farther back.

Turn of wifi or unplug your ethernet cable. Take away the TV's power cable. Move to a room with the least distractions. Put on headphones with music (works for me, helps me focus) and work.

There is no cure for the plague that is Procrastination. It is a disease that affects over 90% of the global population. Many are unable to fight it off and thus, succumb to it with no hope of rejuvenation. The best way to cope with this horrid disease is to simply enjoy your last few hours, as there is absolutely no hope for you. I'm so sorry.

Let me post now, I'll finish it later

Just do it. Like really, Don't find a game or a some reward to get it done or to do it faster. Just sit down and do the work

I'm assuming you mean essays/projects and not general HW.

1)Set a timeline immediately. This timeline involves checkpoints of course. If an essay has an extremely short timeline do it ASAP, if it it's due in like a month or two start at least two weeks before. Or add 1-2 weeks depending upon how big the project is.
2)Do a little bit at a time, but as I said before use a timeline to nibble it down.
3)If you know you're fucked do the most important parts, just consider it damage control.

If you come to a "student's block" (considering sometimes a PP presentation or something visual, not always applying to writing) on what to do, I don't know how to help you though, outside of damage control.

Currently trying to get through an English project which I pegged for two weeks but probably should have started the day I got it.

EDIT:If you're really serious about cutting off all distractions all you need to do is delete your system 32 file. NOTE THIS IS NOT SERIOUS ADVICE.

To avoid procrastination, don't go on the internet. This is an absolute essential and should be enforced rigidly. Go somewhere without internet connection, disconnect your internet and don't turn it back on. The best way I've found is to literally shut down or lock out all electronic devices save from my laptop for a certain period of time (can be done with certain electrical devices) When you're left with nothing to do but work, it is a little easier.
