My idea isn't as cool as some of these but get a "summer job" as a journo somewhere. I work for a media house here in South Aus and the amount of kids we get in over the school holidays is phenomenal - the money isn't that great but the experience is a real eye opener.

Just don't work with me, it's not pretty ;)

Learn an instrument and join a band. Extra points if you join a rock band with an unorthodox rock instrument. Violin, say, or flute.
Well, Breaking Benjamin mainly uses Elec Guitar, Bass Guitar, Drums, and synthesizer maybe. Hoever, I'ts FLEXIBLE ENOUGH to use Piano, Violin, ECT. Look in the last song of Phobia.

Righteo, I have about 2 months off starting next week until I'm due back at uni. During this time, I hope to get some stuff done.

1. Write more
As an English teacher I fully support this option. Set some goals. Realistic or not. The only way to get anything published is to keep trying.

Yell at rats.
(It's apparently in your interests)
Mostly I support you writing more, and would like to persuade you to not get Myspace or Facebook. Data mining is a *****, and once you make an account, (so I've heard) they keep that information forever.

Maybe you could take up a hobby? I don't know your interests so I can't give you any real suggestions.

I do advise writing (and reading) more often. Maybe you could work on the great Australian novel or a poem that does not involve sheep and suicide.

Don't take up a Myspace or Facebook. It will make you it's slave, constantly going back to your page to check if "Rick" from "Ohio" has sent you a message and then when you find that he has sent you something it is only meaningless chatter and then this is when you start to get really angry! But you have spent so much time on Myspace that you don't know what to do when angry so you just gossip about people behind there back but eventually they find out what you have been doing and then all your friends leave you and your left with an empty Myspace and know you have nothing left to do! Your life has become an empty shell.

Well maybe not, but still don't get myspace.

Woo! Road trip!

Enough of that. How is it with all the Australians here, no one mentions AC/DC and their (occasional) use of bagpipes in hard rock classics?

Thank you Fire Daemon. Thank you for not recommending either Facebook or Myspace. I'm an antisocial freak and proud of it. "Rick" from "Ohio" will just have to do something else with his time, because I certainly won't be there.

Ahh, three (now four) short paragraphs of disconnected, non-value-adding dross. My work here is done (but I still recommend the road trip if you can).

Maybe submit to the Escapist if I come up with a good idea, but basically just ask everybody for freelance work (I'm a student journo). There's a bio-tech magazine I might be in with, but that's nothing definite at the moment.

2. Set up a MySpace and Facebook page.

I've never done it, mostly because I never have the time or gumption to update it regularly. I'd like to see what all the fuss is about

=============================================================================================

Well, that's all I got so far, so members of the Escapist forums, I pose a question to you.

What should I do with my spare time?

I will consider ALL suggestions, even the joke ones.
Learn an instrument
Meet many women
Play MGS4
Solve a huge jigsaw
Read an epic novel
Troll some random forums
Troll 4chan, hellspawn that it is
Buy and watch some series of your favorite shows
Download an Anime
Wait for Spore
Listen to old people talk about when spore was announced oh so long ago
Play MGS4 again

Huzzah!

Quick update. I have a job in a coffee shop, so I want to earn some more money there.

Why I want to earn money is because I don't have a car yet. But I could take a road trip on some kind of Greyhound......bus.

At the moment I'm thinking freelance (I have to get my portfolio together) and doing some more reviews for here.

I have no musical talent whatsoever though.

Keep up the suggestions, this is actually helping a bit!

The sensible suggestion: Work.

The real suggestion: Go outside and read books.

The bicycle idea sounds cool, but it may not always be possible seeing as I'm in the southern hemisphere...
You'll have to forgive me my ignorance but, why does being in Perth affect your ability to ride?

In Europe you can buy an inter-rail pass that let you travel around Europe for a month or something. I don't know if you have something like it in AU, but you could always hitchhike or something.. No fuck it.. Just go to Europe! Australians get tons of women, especially here in scandinavia. I have an australian roommate and he's been getting laid so much it's starting to get depressing for me to hear about. T

Note to self: go to scandinavia.

Because it's the middle of winter. Not exactly cycling weather, like a couple of days ago, torrential downpour. Back me up here Saskwatch

That's no excuse to an Englishman!
Its been raining for two days straight (and I mean straight) here and it keeps doing that through most of the summer and all of the winter. Plus where I'm from oop north there's perma frost from January to March. Mud and ice just make for better skills... and scares...
