Hi,
Long time reader, first time poster here. Normally I don't post on forums like this, to tell the truth I'm more of a 4chan kind of guy. Now I've decided to post this here because most of the people I know don't come to the escapist and it's a more mature forum at that(I hope).
Now I'm coming off of a slump, I've been sitting in my room for about 4 days playing video games and eating, not going outside and just overall being a lazy ass. The only reasons I did this would have to attribute to me playing ninja gaiden black (hardest game ever made for last gen consoles maybe) KoToR and I realized that I had 18.5 hours of TF2 left so I wanted to make the most of that. Now This all has nothing to do with my post and questions there after.
Now on Tuesday of last week was my senior prom. I wasn't really all that excited for it to tell the truth, I was original not going to go until a girl asked me. Now I had originally told this girl up front that I was terrible date and this would come true later on. So we get to prom in a kinda crappy limo. All my friend as there, noticing that my date has left me for here friends I quickly do the same. Noticing that 1 of my friends I arrived with via the limo is not with our group I look for him, seeing that he's with the girl that asked him, I making my leave. The night drags on. Now the girl that I'm in to has arrived with her boyfriend, and having never met the guy before, I introduce myself and get no response other then a grunt (OK so he's kind of a dick). His girlfriend makes the excuse that he's anti-social, I think to myself that so am I but it doesn't stop me from giving a proper greeting and being a gentleman. All the guys even dates show up in full tuxedos, he shows up in a sweater and tight jeans. The night continues to drag on. I wasn't really hungry so I don't eat dinner. I go back outside after dinner is finished and start talking to some friends. At this point I'm feeling kind of stressed out for some reason so I bum a cigarette of some guy(I rarely smoke). I'm Immediately chastised by friends and a group of kids who move away from me. Although my friends do stay with me they give me the whole remember last year how you said "cigarettes are gross". I finished the thing and go get a drink. The rest of the night is spent walking back and forth with friends talking about stupid crap and pretty much completely ignoring our dates who seem fine with it. So prom ends and 1 of my friend is looking kinda down I ask him what the deal is he says that he missed the final slow dance with his date because he had to take a leak, she started crying after saying everything is fine. I state "High school bullshit, your a nice guy and that's the only reason this bothers you". So at this point I have two choices go back to my missed the last dance friend's dates house and hang out with a group of kid who I kind of know or go to a big party. I decided to go to the girls house, which is a good thing cause I found out about an hour later that the police shut down the party. So as we leave the prom. The boyfriend apparently grabbed a cab and left without saying a word to his date. This brings her to tears when she finds out. The rest of the night goes on without much incident. At about 4am we leave her house and head to the beach to watch the sun rise, I call up some friends they show up and we smoke a spliff (pot with tobacco if you don't know) of the about 14 people of the group we came with only the 3 friends that I called and I stay stick around once the thing is lit. We smoke it and leave I head back in to Manhattan with a friend and stop by my friends house. we eat some pudding and we pass out.

Now after all that. I have a couple questions.
1) Do you think its okay that the boyfriend left without saying a word? Ladies, if you read this post would you leave him?
2) Why do you think it's so ingrained in to people to just shun those who smoke(Tobacco and marijuana)?
3) Was anyone else extremely glad to leave high school after a night like that?

I know the post may be pretty long and a lot of people may say tl;dr and I'm sure that there are spelling errors as well as grammar errors, but I really don't want to read it and spell/grammar check.
Thank you for your time.

1) That was a total dick move, its a shame guys like that get all the woman (Warning, Man who has never gotten a girl bitching, Warning)

2) Mostly because the smoke gets us non-smokers too, we dont like that

3) I didn't even bother with proms, I graduated off the normal time frame so I missed grad and prom, and damn glad for it.

Sounds like a whole lot of people that really have no idea what the world is like... In 5 years you won't remember that shit, or you will and you just won't care... High School was a bunch of kids trying to pretend they're Dawson's Creek, even though that wasn't out when I was in High School...

One of the reasons people shun smokers is A. because smoking is gross, B. Smoking causes disease, C. Lots and LOTS of advertising that has said both A and B over and over and over again

My prom was fairly stupid and uneventful, kinda sucked actually... but my school had a history of not giving a damn about stuff like that

Welcome to the life of not being popular... you have a great mentality about yourself and you are just not being noticed.
1) Boyfriend sounds like an ass, but then again I don't live in America so standards and expectations may be different. If I were a girl I wouldn't be happy, but as often goes with the territory, they will stay with him because he's popular/fit/similar.
2) I have no problem with smoking (any combination), I don't smoke but am a very rare social smoker. I don't like smoke at all but it calms me on occasion. Weed... no problem in moderation.
3) Badly phrased question, did you mean *would* anyone else be extremely glad...? because it's implying that we all have gone through a similar night. I personally would be, as was in a similar-esque situation when I left at 18. However I've recently realised that it was one of my favourite times of life, I didn't notice it at the time, and you probably don't see all of the good aspects now but whilst it is good to move on, don't look back and say thank god that's over... be thankful.

4) is it normal for guys to make their dates cry over there? or are the girls just too much into crying?

that first one could've been interpreted as "mmm I don't wanna slowdance with you so I'll just say I need a leak, I do that because I totally not like you" by the girl >.>

1) He is, and plese stop with the accusation that all americans are that way. He is just as much a jerk here any were else (Except in his retarted mind). In America, the joke isn't funny, partly because it's not fair to the good americans (Who post on this foram), and mostly because there is no England/Australia (That seems to be the main places everyone lives in) joke we can come back with without being labled a jerk, because if Yahtzee made an England/Australia joke we would be the happist beings on earth for finale having a come back. So please, stop with the "America is a jerk" joke. Please. Yes, the girl goes for the pretty/athletic/similar boy.

2)People could just ask nicely to move were, I don't know, the wind isn't blowing it over to them, or whatever the reason (Not just because your smokeing, they can move too)is.

3)Prom is over rated and I don't plan to go to it.

1. Its kind of a douche move of the guy, but the girlfriend did choose to go with him in the first place. Either way, it really isn't much of your business anyway, its something she needs to work out with him.
2. I've never smoked in my life, be it tobaccy or wacky tobaccy. I really didn't see the point in it. However the reason you get shunned is because you're a little kid trying to look cool by lighting up. Apart from smoke being irritating to the senses, people trying to act badass and "against the system"(I'm assuming the school wouldn't have allowed ciggies at the function if they had known about them, so you're mainly doing it to show what a rebel you are.
.3. I dunno about the last one, I actually had fun at my prom. The dance itself was a POS, there weren't enough funds, and the class that put it on did a terrible job. Either way, my date, my friends, and I all had fun dancing to the stupid music, and booby trapping the props.(There were little tent-roof structures over the dining tables, and we hid cream puffs in the roof and knocked them down on top of people.)

I think you're just being melodramatic and self-obsessed. Of course the girl left you, you were probably moping around bitching about the prom, plus trying to get together with a different girl. If you spend all week in your room playing games, and you expect girls to ask you to dances and social events, of course you're going to be a loser. If you had a bad time at the prom, you have nobody to blame but yourself.

1. it's pretty low
2. Some people legitimately think it stinks, if you were smoking outside they can walk away. If you were smoking indoors, it's a little rude but justified.
3. Didn't have a prom night like that. Went stag, danced with other people's dates, it was fun.

I can't really comment on the prom stuff. I live in belgium and we didn't even organise one. I went to another school's prom with some friends once but it's probably not the same. All I know is that I was damn glad to leave high school. I never looked back in nostalgia. The whole wannabe relationship thing... Looking back, it seems like all our brains were on vacation at the time. Just laughable. But maybe that's just me. Everyone's memories are different.

Anyway, I smoke myself (an aweful lot) and I love it. But all my friends are smokers too, so it's not really a problem for me. If it bothers someone I just go some place else. I shouldn't ruin everyone elses health.

1) yeah he's a dick, the showing up in jeans and a sweater to a prom kinda shows what he's like

2) smokers don't piss me off, it's the non-smokers that do, most smokers are nice enough to say "hey do you mind if i smoke?" it's the non-smokers who get all pissy and crabby about you smoking outside. pot is fine

3) that's high school for you

I tried to read your WALL OF TEXT with some interest, but my mind kept being dragged back to that Family Guy episode where Stewie goes to high school to prove to Bryan that he can become the most popular kid in school.

I can't find the clip of it on YouTube, So i'll have to recite:

Boy #1 - "Dude, let me tell you something, there is nothing that will ever happen in the rest of our lives that's as important as what's going on right here, right now, in high school by these lockers"

Boy#2 = "I've got so many problems"

Boy#1 = Hey, nothing that can't be fixed by staring at a lake"

*insert lake scene*

Song - "Hiiiiigh schoool, it's such a serious thing. These problems maaatteeeerrrrrr"

Chin up man, couple of years and all of this will be absolutely nothing!

1. A dick maneuver yes, but it shouldn't have come as a surprise judging by his previous actions. He definitely comes off as anti-social.

2. Reasons for not wanting to associate with smokers probably stem from the fact that it's no longer glamorous. Without any of the movie-star popularity, people simply see it as smelly, cancer-causing addiction. Then again, it's not something I'd walk away from if I was talking to the smoker. Gotta have some class.

3. After a night like that, I'd be glad to go home. It seemed pretty uncomfortable based on your account, however, now that you've graduated, none of it matters at all. You've got a chance to separate yourself from that community and go off to college or get a job and move across town.

You've misinterpreted what I said, I meant that here in the UK those actions are unacceptable. But seeing that I don't live in the US I don't know how everyone acts around each other, what is expected of people and therefore I could not make a *fair* assessment of the situation. If I sat here comparing morals to the UK I would have been branded an egotistical anti-American. I was trying to make a neutral assessment.

I guess you really haven't seen two films from the 80s, Crocodile Dundee and its sequel...
And there are a few jokes for the British. Europe and all the Commonwealth or former Commonwealth countries know 'em: Warm beer, cockneys, cricket, and whinging about petty little things in general...

Back onto the OP I would say that
1) For some reason girls during high school consistently date jerks. Don't know why but I'm guessing it takes them a while to work out that when you hit the real world, most of the geeks, nerds, art weirdos and hard workers all turn out to be the cool people with their consistent hygeine and regular employment. You sound like a geek-type and what your describing is pretty typical to see from the viewpoint of the "nice" guy. Which is often something that has a 50-50 chance of turning into a domestic incident. Chances are you'll get a decent job and live an ok life. And Sir Gruntsyjeans will become homeless/substance abuse/imprisoned/discharged from the armed services with Glory, Dysentry and PTS disorder.

2)Because suicide is considered to be a personal act. Mainly because the smoke is physically off-putting, their most likely not getting the nicotine hit which you use to justify so much damage to your body. Some people get bad reactions with Canabis, especially if their Bi-Polar. Finally I'm pretty sure that Cannabis is illegal in many countries, so breaking the law would be a final point.

3)Yes. Unlike you guys in Oz we don't have prom, we have several alternatives. My school ran Debutante Balls in the old style of it being a woman's entrance to society. This was on the second last year and was quite formal. Only a select few got dressed, the rest of the class usually turn up in just suits and laugh at all the ceremony. Of course there was a grad dinner, that was strictly no-booze, and we all said fine, tried to hit the clubs, but the rain got so bad we all just went to our own casual parties. Then again my year were considered the heaviest drinkers to ever come through that school, so I don't know how it works in the USA.

1) Yeah, the guy is a tool. She needs to not talk to him again. Karma is a *****, so he'll get his eventually.
2) Being a non-smoker, I don't like the smell of it and sure as hell don't want to smell like smoke. Also, kissing a girl that has been smoking it like licking an ash tray. *barf*
3) I went to all my high school proms. I wasn't the most popular person, but had friends and danced up a storm. It is hard to get away from the "high school vibe" and just be yourself though. People get caught up with all sorts of high school politics and that type of crap. As for not going, BIG MISTAKE. Stuff like this is what builds character and you don't gain wisdom by watching.

Also, it drives me crazy that one side of the students thinks it fun to go because they are "trying to fit in" and the other side doesn't want to go, because they don't want to be part of "that" flock, which amazingly enough just puts you into a different flock, negating not being part of one.

no they are being cool and unique just like everyone else :)

tho i kinda see the point of not going too cause frankly some ppl in high school are jerks to certain ppl and i can see not wanting to associate with them

best part i don't smoke anymore but a bunch of friends do and most are pretty respectable about it

i just smoke cigars once in a while, can't beat a nice cuban
