Right, so...a friend of mine at a different site has posted a request for mechanical help regarding some prop-work. I'm not suitably skilled enough to give any useful advice, but I don't want to leave him hanging, so let's see if the Escapist knows any better than I do:
So, is there an engineer in the house, or someone who's done work like this?Hey all, hope 2011 has been going good for everyone and that St. Patty?s was a good holiday to blow off steam. So jumping right in, I have a question for those mechanically/engineered/robotically inclined. In my rare spare time I?ve been helping build props and costumes with a friend. So far been doing the prototype thing with wings for the past 2 months, been using the pulley system to get them to expand and retract. I was pretty sure I got the design for those that she likes down. Well its reached the point where I?m in no mans land.
I?ve found myself in the land of motorized parts! Which I know absolutely nothing about, heck the engine of my own car might as well be the moon for all I know about the parts. The end goal I?ve been tasked with is to make an animatronic skeleton wing frame that uses some type of servos or electric motor to make it move and eleminate the odd connections to the arms. The first goal is to make one that opens and closes as naturally as possible. The second will be to add several motions to it. I was hoping some people here could recommend some tutorials for someone starting out, a good servo type/ motor that can handle 15-25 lbs, and/or a good hobby kit.
Also any tips for making a more comfortable back brace is always appreciated.
