So, lately I've been wondering about all these latest trends and...well, I don't know if I can call it fashion, but its definitely a certain style to say the least. I recently saw a guy, probably about 23 or so, working at a Coldstones(Ice cream shop) with those ear plugs...ya know,
these.

Now, what happens when he actually wants to get a job that will amount to some sort of pay? Or does he plan to move up through the corporate ladder at Coldstones(which I highly doubt is his plan)? Would you hire a clean cut guy or this guy who walks in with those things in his ears? If they could both do the same job...is there any reason to hire the ear plug guy?

And I guess I simply just wonder why people choose to do that to themselves...

People think its cool to do that kind of stuff because either A) they're just following a trend B) they're trying to be different C) They want attention or D) they're retarded.

Those things look too painful for me to ever get.

I'll stick with my normal attire consisting of hoodies, jeans, casual jackets and designer T shirts.

I look good goddamn it.

I wear what I like and is comfortable. If people have a problem with that they can forward all complaints to my non-existent secretary.

Some people wear stuff to get attention. Some people wear stuff because they like it.

I have had an eyebrow piercing, but I won't do a tattoo or anything like a tunnel. This is partially because I don't like the look, and partially because I know the changes will be permanent.

I normally wear jeans and a shirt, then choose one item to be outrageous, like bright shoes or a cool jacket.

Technically, if it's B, then they're not being different because being 'different' has sort of advanced to being a trend, so it's redundant anyway.

I'll meet your bet and raise you this: Ed Hardy freaks who wears their baseball cap sideways and have their pant waists at their knees. And they hold onto their pants while doing a gangsta stroll.

Normal attire for me is whatever the I can slip on in time yet looks good. It mostly just ends up being me in cargo pants, and a white, sleeved, button-up shirts.

That was the point. People try desperately to be different yet all they're really doing is creating a new trend or even following what others do.

If you ask the guy in that picture with the hoops through his ears why he's doing that, I'll bet he'd say he's trying to be different, yet I'll also hazard a guess that most of his friends look like that too.

See what I'm saying?

Yeah those plug things are really stupid. It's not like a regular piercing that you can just take out or a tattoo that you can cover up (assuming you didn't get one on your face or something.) maybe they think it looks cool? I personally think it looks retarded, but there's places where they do shit like this

So i guess it could be worse.

Well, why not? I like the way piercings look; I'm broke as hell, but when I start making money I'm planning on getting at least a couple more holes poked in my ears, and I have a tattoo planned for when I graduate college. (I also love the look of scarification, but I'm too much of a wuss to get anything like that done.)

As for being hired, well, it depends on where you are and what you do. In the research labs I've interned at, for the most part people don't really care if you've got tattoos, and while large gauge piercings like that aren't common, they're not a dealbreaker, either. A good friend of mine interns at a software company, and the guys he works with are all young and hip and inked up. I imagine lawyers might get looked at funny if they come in with lip piercings, but scientists? Whatever, they're all crazy hippies anyways :V

I refuse to follow a fashion that invovles putting a piece of metal in my body. It just isn't worth it.

Well, that looks dumb as shit.

But I'd rather have him wear it, than assimilate him.

This paragon of beauty was also wearing ear plugs at a prior date.

Her husband will gladly bequeath her unto you for the bargain price of 40 cows.

I suppose it all depends on where an employer would draw the line. Personally, I draw the line at those hideous looking ear drum things, too. But if you look at GuitarMasterx7's picture, you will notice that the person has also been wearing those ear drum things. (Big holes in the ear lobes.)

people who would do that probably won't ever want a job that they couldn't possibly ever get.

More often then not, they'd be part of a society of like minded people who stick together, start businesses together, or just rob cars.

I keeeed I keeeed.

I think you missed the point of the thread, Lady Gaga is RICH she can wear what she wants, This guy at the Ice Cream shop is working minimum wage for what 6 an hour? The point is if he wants to make more money what should he do.

This reminds me of an episode in Nip/Tuck Where a guy gets kicked out of some rock bank and goes in to get his ears fixed so he can get "a real job" and basically yeah he does, he gets his ears surgically fixed.

This guy would most likely have to do the same, sad but true that self expression gives off the wrong vibe in the corporate world.

But in all honestly if the guy is going to college to be an Engineer or something, His life is sweet, Engies don't have to do face to face meetings and deal with shit, it's a high demand industry.

some people just like the looks of it. i have a piercing in my bellybutton and i like it, my boyfriend likes it so everybody is happy, are they not.

modifications that are clearly visible with normal clothing, like the ear plug in the original post should be well though about, but if anybody want's to do it they should. they just have to be aware of the consequences, for example jobwise.

If I was a job interviewer, and someone walked in dressed in a suit, looking professional, clean shaven, well groomed, and a second man walked in, dressed in a suit, looking professional, clean shaven, well groomed, and he had a hole in his ear I could have put glass in and used to magnify things, I would prbably go with the first man, assuming their resumes were otherwise exactly equal.

Appearance counts in the world of business, and you have to be wealthy beyond measure before you can start wearing what you like to work. Even top execs in the biggest companies in the world wear suits, it's just more professional.

I had a class once with a guy who used to put his headphones through his ear plugs, which was a bit rank.

I'm quite partial to Lady Gagas persona. Sure its clear she's trying to be out there and profound, but at the very worst it makes for interesting music videos.
