An odd thought occured to me earlier today.

Why, exactly, is prostitution, or the selling of one's body for sex, illegal? I mean, besides the various health issues? Why exactly is it illegal for one to offer their body as a service in this manner? It doesn't seem like the kind of thing you outlaw - more like the thing you regulate and tax to fund your nightly money baths.

Hell, so long as you actually keep up with the regulation you set, health and criminal issues involving something like prostitution become negligable in the face of something like illegal substances.

And honestly, I never saw the original issue with the premise. Sex + money = More money.

It has to do with the criminal activity that is linked to prostitution. /thread

Because if it was legalised there'd be a big increase in people trafficking, which is bad stuff.

EDIT: we have already covered that I am wrong, stop pointing it out.

possibly because of feminism. People think its sexist, cause prostitutes generally means female. Even though there can be such things as male prostitutes, people generally think of females.

Also, health issue, STD's might run riot. That said, if it were regulated then chances are people would obey it. Still, I dunno, guess people think theres no place for it in a civilised society.

Which is to say, if you want to decrease the property values where you live, make prostitution legal there.
Property values can be a *****.
OT: I highly doubt alot of people want to live in a city were there are whores every 30 feet. Not to say it would get that bad, but it's the idea that matters.

Because acording to society, sex is wrong and should only be used to make children.

If it was legalised, then it could be controlled and made safer for the prostitutes in question. They are going to do it either way, so it might as well be legal, and therefore safer for the prostitutes, like Amsterdam. I don't foresee a sudden influx of prostitutes.

Although personally i wouldn't pay for sex, but that's just me.

Probably because quite a few whores are forced into it or are drug addicts and doing it to support a coke habit.
That's an amazingly terrible justification. If it suddenly becomes a trend to force women to sell shoes, should selling shoes be banned?

It's banned because of "morals."

Well speaking as someone who used to ARREST them ... I would say that it's because a large number of the types of women who get into prostitiution, legal or otherwise, have a tendancy to support drug habits with said money. The purchase of drugs gives dealers more money more money for dealers is more problems for everyone. Not to mention that about 90% of all 'johns' are married and that creates a whole bunch of problems on it's own.

Also, the spread of disease.

Because they make all this money and don't ever pay taxes.

Actually, I have no clue why.

*Does Kevin Spacey in Superman Returns impression.* WRONG!

Legalizing prostitution would completely eliminate the criminal element, therefore eliminating the trafficking also. You know, the same way America made mobsters and mafiosis a favour by putting prohibition in act in the '20s.

Frankly, if it where up to me, It would be legal. Same goes for marijuana. It would make sense to legalize them, right? Well, sense just doesn't cut it with some people.

No, but forcing some one to sell shoes should be.

To be honest, I can't understand it - if two adults want to make a private consesnting transaction that affects only them, then I see no reason why there should be a law against it.

I'd say legalise it, with professional prostitutes requiring licenses and regular health check ups if they want to work in brothels.

I think brothels should be legal. Selling yourself on the streets can be very very dangerous, but if it's in a safe environment, I see no problem with it
