Now Escapist, I think we have all played enough games to be able to weigh in on this topic.

Protagonists.

They make or break a game. But what style of protagonist enriches your gaming experience? Do you like to fine tune every last cuticle on your character and really shape them into your avatar in the gaming world, dressing him/her up like a virtual doll? Or is the too large for life badass with the self aware one liners more your thing? Maybe you go at a different speed all together and prefer playing as the stoic character through whom you can insert yourself into the game.

The emotionally realistic character who goes through a transformation.

A group of characters who play off each other.

Maybe something different all together...

So search your brain, heart and every other organ for your perfect protagonist experience. Don't feel bound by genre, only because protagonist style A hasn't been in genre B doesn't mean it wouldn't work.

I like the protagonists who don't take shit in a non-hormoney way.

Yuri Lowell from Tales of Vesperia is a good example. He captured corrupt politicians and the like, but later when he found out that they would be released due to their money/influence, did he take the common hero stance of 'Well, I'll always be here to stomp them over and over again!'?

Hell no. Yuri went and murdered them in cold blood. Kudos for him.

I like many types of protagonists. I can't narrow it down to one. What I can't stand is the Duke Nukem-esque character. He gets on my nerves.

If I absolutely had to pick one, it would be the strong, intelligent, quiet, lone wolf style badass, who is troubled in some way or other.

perfection would be one that looks and acts exactly the way i want them to, along with a world that responds correctly to those actions... but thats difficult...

at the least, it would be one that can take on multiple personalities, combat styles, etc. and must be open to complete customisation... as i play very different characters each time i restart a game, and each needs to feel, act, affect the world and play/fight/generally do thing almost complete differently to the last.

so far, a few games have almost provided this though... Soulcalibur IV's character creation was great, but was lacking is voice options... Oblivion too, but the world doesnt change much based of your choices and actions... where as Dragon Age gave great reactions to your characters personality, your characters always look both the same as each other, and everyone else around them... and they all end up doing the same quests and achieving the same things in the same ways...
good... but not perfect :/

Thanks for spoiling a game I just started yesterday. Though, i don't really mind spoilers all that much. Not really enjoying the combat in the game either, prefers the Star Ocean version for some reason. :p

Repede: *woof*

All I want is a character that's human. A man who can cry when a close friend dies, or a woman can stop being a tomboy for a second when the need is there. Not a big fan of stereotypes.

a little off-topic, but Tales of Vesperia's combat system greatly improves at the end of your first playthrough and the majority of subsequent grade-enhanced new games.

a-la:

above these stylish combos... some characters have infinites, if not, something to make up for it.

Sweet!

That was combotastic! I'm still very early in the game, just met Estele and bout to hit the road to find blondie. Definitely love the humor so far. Poor Tweeb A and Tweeb B :)
