I recently received a free replacement iPod Classic (160gb) in the mail after having sent my previous one in for a repair. I want to protect it from external damage of any sort. I already have a protective casing, but the casing itself actually caused damage overtime to the metal part of my previous iPod - scratched it up and left behind something similar to rust. I don't know if iPods are allergic to a certain form of latex, or what.
But the point is, I need a protective casing that won't do that. This may be oddly specific, but does anybody else on here own an iPod Classic and use a protective casing that you're really satisfied with, that doesn't cause any over-time damage?

I use a Belkin iPod case that I got free as part of an accessory pack when I bought my iPod Classic and I don't have any complaints.
It's made of tough clear acrylic and snaps onto the iPod in two halves. In fact, I put it on straight away and I haven't taken it off in the 3-4 years I've had my iPod.
As for how effective it is, it's hard to tell because I'm relatively careful with my iPod and have never had an uncased iPod to compare it too, but as far as I can tell it's done a good job - my iPod still works like new and as far as I can tell without ever having removed the case, it's original finish should be almost as good as new - I can see it's a little dusty and slightly grimy, but it's still looks like a mirror and hasn't been corroded by the case.
The case itself is mostly undamaged too, there's a few scuffs from wear and tear (but that's the point of a case), but it's not broken or failed in any way.
It's tough and well moulded with a very tight fit (so there's no scratch inducing friction between the case and iPod) and will probably outlive the iPod itself. As far as I can tell the touch wheels as just as responsive as it would be without a case and on the few times I've dropped it, the case hasn't ever broken or come apart in any way.

I like your suggestion for sure, but that case is a bit out of my price range. I went and got it here [http://www.ebay.com/itm/U14-New-Belkin-Remix-Metal-Hard-Case-iPod-Classic-80GB-120GB-160GB-Silver-/230706868437?pt=Other_MP3_Player_Accessories&hash=item35b73370d5] instead. But why was he able to cut the price down so far? Does this look like a Chinese copy to anybody?

I only linked that Amazon page because it was the first result I could find with a picture of the same case I have, it wasn't meant as an indication of the price.
I got mine for very cheaply with an accessory kit, which was approximately the UK equivalent of $12, so they can be legitimately bought for less than that random Amazon page if you shop around.
The guy on E-Bay probably has contacts in the industry and/or buys them in bulk (plus despite it being a very good quality case, it's probably very cheap to manufacture per unit - it's just tough acrylic moulded to a very specific template), so I shouldn't worry about the seemingly lower price, it's probably slightly inflated on Amazon if anything.
