dodging the obvious "I think therefore, I am" answer, I exist because even if everything in this 'reality' (including pain and physics) was fabricated by some all powerful being, I will still have to exist in some form, otherwise this being would have nothing to deceive.

Actually now that I think about it, Descartes already said that...

For all I know, I'm God and I created this world for my amusement. Perhaps you exist in that world, but perhaps you don't (at least not as actual entities).

A person can only be sure of his own existance at the present moment, the rest is open to speculation.
