Ok, so I've seen that some people have got PS games on their PSP, so I was wondering, can you put PS1 games on a PSP? And how do you do it?

Also, is it legal? (That should probably be first actually) cause I do actually own the games. It's just a little bit of a pain because my Gran Turismo 1 disc is a little scratched and doesn't play properly on my emulator.

Anyway, I bought a whole host of PS1 games over the holidays and it's not really my cup of tea playing them on a PC.

You have to download (i.e. re-buy) the game off the PSN network, then install it on the PSP. As I don't own a PSP I'm not sure how the whole process works.

But PC emulator games could work with a bit of searching around the internet.

Yuo can do this by buying through PSN. Also you can install games from discs I've done this but I can't remember exactly what I did. I'll list what I do remember.

First you need custom firmware. There are many good PSP modding sites.

Then you will need a program to rip and convert the files. Again you will find this info on PSP modding sites.

Then you chuck the converted files on to a memory stick and away you go.

I'm pretty sure someone has found a way to do it. You'll probably need a program that can copy the game onto your computer then copy it over to the PSP.

There's all sorts of videos and discussions on all the weird things you can do with the PSP so it wouldn't be much of a surprise. My bro uses his to emulate NES and SNES games.

Ah cool :) thanks guys! Little bit of money wasted on the games lol, think I'll get them off PSN, it seems the easier and more legal way of doing it. :)

Yes you can play PS1 games on your PSP, BUT there is a hitch. There is the "legal" and illegal" methods. THe legal method is that the PSN has a host of PS1 games on their network which you can buy and download onto your PS3 or PSP. It uses special emulation software that allows you to play it properly. That is the only fair method at the moment if you do not wish to mod your PSP. The downside is you are restricted to what PS1 games are available on the PSN.

The "illegal" method is to install custom firmware on your PSP, get a PS1 emulator, and rip those games you have onto a memory stick. And modding your PSP from my recent knowledge, only works on PSP 1000's and 2000's. If you got the Go or a 3000 model it can't be fully modded.

There are programs you can use to do it, but it requires specific cracked firmware. It's a nice way to get a second wind out of old PS1 titles though.

There are a few PS1 games you can download from the PSN, the most popular being Final Fantasy VII, of course. But it's been possible to do waaaaaay before that, if you have custom firmware, and were willing to tamper some more.

the legality of this is quite questionable, basically if you have a anti modchip stance, then you should not do this, as custom firmwares can be used for more questionable pursits.

mind you im not saying i object to custum firmwares im just giving you (the author of the thread not the post) a brief warning about them.

That's how I did it. I just recently learned that you can do that.
It's pretty easy. Go to the psn store's ps1 section, buy/download the game, connect the psp to the ps3 with the usb cord, then copy it onto the psp.
Most of the games are $5 but the really popular ones (like ff7) are $10 which I think is a little steep but probably still a better price than what you could find it for used.

With custom firmware it is possible. Just convert an ISO of a ps1 game to a .pbp file, put that in the correct directory of the PSP's memory card, and sorted.

If you own an original copy of the game then it must be legal, plus it saves having to re-buy games off the PSN store.

Look up some tutorials on it. It's simpler than it sounds. I used to do it all the time when I had a PSP. Was great having Final Fantasy VIII on a portable.

May I ask why you don't want to play them on an emulator on your PC? If you get a decent control pad then the experience will be better as you are using the original input method and it will be easier to see things as the screen is larger.

Edit: also, you should be able to just get rid of the scratches on the GT disc using one of those things that look a little like a sanding disc. Most computer game shops offer the service for a small fee (of course, it'll only work if your disc is only "a little" scratched).

If any part of this modifies either the system or the content to bypass copy protection, then it's illegal in the US and possibly where you live if not American. If the firmware hacks modify your PSP so it can dodge copy protection, that's still illegal.

Of course, I can't stop anyone, and won't go ranting. Just pointing out the legal issues in concrete terms.

Also, I love playing PS1 games on my PSP. Thogh at current count, I only have 2.

Wait, you need a PS3? Can you not get it off the PSP direct?

Yes you can, just install the media go software on your computer, log into PSN and purchase your game. Make sure your PSP is connected to your computer via USB cable.

I am pretty sure you can't download directly to the psp. I'm not sure why not but I would be pretty surprised if you could.
Anyone confirm this?
I was thinking about getting C&C RA tonight. If I do I'll try through the psp directly and let you know for sure.
Read the my above statement, yes you can. It would be entirely stupid if you couldn't seeing as it would alienate a lot of users who don't have a PS3 such as myself. Hell as long as you have some sort of wireless connection, you can log into the store via your PSP and DL games, although that would be hella slow.

No you don't need a ps3. The games work on the ps3 as well but you can download the file onto a computer instead.
