Do you know if the store will replace the laser for me?
Don't bother going to Gameshop or any big chains. Their repair services are sub-par, assuming they'll even do it for a console that old. Your best bet is finding a shop that specializes in retro gaming that offers repair services. They will be able to fix it for sure. Search your area, see if there's one around, and give it a go.

Failing that, you could always try your luck at a local electronics repair shop.

I suppose just replacing the entire console works too. It's not like a PS1 is rare, or expensive.

Anyway, should your new PS1 also crap out, considered getting a PS2 slim instead. They have fewer mechanical moving parts, lower power consumption, and they're not as old, which makes them generally more reliable. And it'll run pretty much all PS1 games you'd actually want to play. A PS3 would work too. Especially a phat launch model, since those play PS1, 2 and 3 games, but they've gotten pretty pricey. Any PS3 will do for PS1 games tho.
