So I just learned that you can get PS2 emulators for computers and I'm wondering if anyone uses them or knows of one that can work on Mac.

Some of you may know that I'm looking to buy a new PS2 along with all my old games back so if I could get an emulator that would save me a lot of money.

Also, is this illegal? I mean, I have the games and I've bought 2 PS2s in my life, so does that make it legal?

Yeah you can get them on the net easy. Not sure about the Mac thing. I doubt it to be honest, there will be more for the PC. I understand you have paid a lot of money for your consoles and games, but I'm afraid this is still illegal. And Sony definitely WONT understand.

yeah but i use them on my psp, kinda crap actually.
This guy's right. All of the ones I have seen are crap. You may find it fun for a while, but none of them compare to the actual console they are emulating in my opinion.

Emulation past PS1 is kinda crappy.

The good thing about PS1 Emulation is that you can put in your origional discs and play them, like wise with PS2 but the PS2 Emulators are going through the same growing pains.

I have yet to find one that I can put a PS2 disc into my PC, load up the EMU and have it just work.

Emulators past the N64/PS1 era just don't work that well. Even some DS and GBA emulators still screw up on certain games. At this point it is just unreliable. Though if you can wait a few(maybe 3-6) more years, I'm sure it'll work just fine, or possibly Sony will pull their heads out of their asses and just make their new console backwards compatible with all their previous ones(a man can dream can't he?)

There are as far as i know no known PS2 emulators that actually work. In fact, not even the PS1 emulators work that well.

If you want to blame anyone then blame Sony for making there consoles needlessly complex, i have used N64 and Gamecube emulators without suffering from any real problems.
I'm already blaming sony for it. I'm pissed that there's no backwards compatibility with pS3

Really Gamecube emulators?

Were do you get these?

The emulators themselves aren't illegal, ROMs are, though. Same for the console's BIOS, if you downloaded it instead of grabbing it off of your own PS2 (don't ask me how that works, though, I totally forgot).
I sometimes use a PSone Emulator because when trying to play those games on my PS2, I cannot save - the games don't recognize the memory card. Do I have to use an original PSX memory card on my PS2 for that to work? Anyways, that PSX emu works pretty fine, actually.

I tested a PS2 emu once for giggles and all I can say is it uses A LOT of resources, my machine is not that bad but still cannot really handle it. Dual Core is a must. Also, many games don't work very well, there are compatibility lists out there, though.

Yes, i bought a PS1 memory card for my PS2 years ago once i found out that PS1 games wont save on my PS2 memory card. Just buy a PS1 memory card and use that, it will work (or at least it did in my case).
Alright cool, thanks. Now I can finally play Fear Effect on my couch, with a good controller and a surround system. :p

Edit: Do all PSone memory cards work on a regular PS2 (not slim)? Because I've now seen people saying their PSX memory card doesn't work on their PS2 slim.

emulator controls suck on a computer.
unless there is a way to connect an actual controller.

i'm sure there is some for mac and i think its legal, if you still have the games you download... i think...
