I recently updated to 2.42 with my PS3 (was going to play the Game of the Week in Civilization Revolutions) and I had to update to the newest firmware. Shouldn't be an issue, I thought. Rarely have I had problems with updates and patches before on just about anything.

Well, I played through the GOTW without issue. I decided to play another game and I froze in the modern era.

Not a big deal.

Just so you guys get an idea of when it happened: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=7123268&posted=1#post7123268

Not a big deal. I went to bed and started up the next day (same day I had posted that on the forums) and won, as the thread shows. I then played some MGS4 and finished my gaming session off with my first game on Deity difficulty (played as The Mongols). All without issue.

So yesterday I turn my PS3 on and go to play some Civ Rev. I started and played for, about, 30 minutes. I then froze like before. "Great." Not a big deal. I figured it froze due to me canceling all the animations that pop or regularly and then hitting something that triggered another animation from a different source while another animation was still going on. I decided to take a break.

After a bit I went down stairs to finish up MGS4 and everything was normal. I put in the disk, it detected it, everything gravy. I hit X at the first screen (the one that reminds you to not turn your game off while saving) and I get a black screen. I wait. And wait. And wait some more. XMB wasn't working so I held down the eject button. No dice. Held down the power button. No dice. Only option was to turn it off from the back.

Turned it back on, tried it again. "Could not play the disk (Error 8000934891324)." That's not the exact error or numbers, but the 8, 0's, and 9 are pretty close.

I tried Civ Rev. No dice. Same thing.

I tried a Blue ray movie. No dice. Different error (Couldn't Load Media I think?).

I tried a music CD. It worked! What the hell?

I tried a movie DVD. It worked! Hmm...

At first I thought my Blue Ray drive, lens, diode, or whatever had burnt out/broken/gone the way of the dodo. So I did some searching and didn't find this until a bit ago:

Yeah, long link. A lot of people are experiencing the same issue. I really doubt that this is anything besides a firmware issue, although the firmware could have bricked everyones hardware.

I know this is not my case because I can still load and play Rock Band and Civ Rev (Could probably do the same with Assassins Creed and Drakes Fortune) if I turn off my PS3 from the back and turn it back on, however, once exiting the game the system does not play any other games and eventually stops detecting them. It also does not eject the disk on command, forcing you to hold the eject button for 10 seconds in order to get the disk out.

If anyone else has had this problem it'd be great to know if/how you fixed this. I really want to finish MGS4 :(.

I have experienced the same fault and in the same manner, first audio, then freezing and now not recognizing game discs at all nor being able to eject the disc currently in it. My only difference was that the game I initially experienced problems with was the Orange Box (and so was not immediately sure the PS3 was to blame....) now nothing works.

Spoken with Sony, and they are in denial, still towing the official line that nothing has been reported.

So far I've had no trouble with the update, but after hearing about these issues I held off for a bit longer.

Honestly, I love my PS3 to death, but these firmware updates are getting ridiculous.
