Why would it be a bad thing?

When an item reaches the point you're willing to pay for it, buy it. The end.

It's a sign they're desperate to move consoles, maybe because of lack of funds. It could lead to closures of gaming departments or even entire companies.

Well it's true that Sony is in trouble at the moment, but if the kid wants a PS3 then a price drop is great news - so long as he's not buying it based on future promises like Sony's 10-year plan. I'm not counting on Sony releasing any games past the ones already announced for this year - if they do, fine. If they don't then... hey, I can still watch Casino Royale and The Fifth Element in high definition.

It would be a bad thing for Sony, but a good thing for us, especially me. :D
Everything else is half price nowadays apart from consoles and games...

I think Sony needs to; they're just not moving the consoles right now, not many people want to buy an expensive machine with a blu-ray when for a much lower price they could get a 360 with a larger library or a Wii with... kids games?

Its a sign they've finished milking the high-end market, and are now moving down the line.

well the price drop is good and bad, it will hurt microsoft and sony, but help the consumer, and in that turn help microsoft and sony, its a double edged sword.

Why on earth would it be a bad thing for Sony? The only way a price drop would hurt the PS3 is if they can't get the attachment rate up for games and accs. . The PS2 sold at a loss for years as well. It is unfortunate that Sony can't put out a Blu Rayless PS3 for $199 or something like that.

yup, tho it would be better for sony than for microsoft, as sony would probly close the gap faster than they are now as many fence sitters would finally get one and many who own only a 360 will get a ps3 as well if they want both

tho it will be bad for the books and losses

Pretty much saying what everyone else is....With any product you have to achieve the correct balance of price and volume sold. Selling a lot of cheap products can easily return as much or more then if you sold a few expensive ones. This applies to pretty much everything in the retail world. I don't see how it'll be bad.

The price of the PS3 is sitting above some psychological number-barriers that really don't help it right now.
Japan > ¥30,000
UK > £250
US > $300

Once the price dips below those figure, it'll look a lot cheaper. It's still good value at the current price, but it just speaks of such a large dent in consumers' wallets.

With the way the market is at the time being, sony reporting a massive loss as a whole company just SOE, and it constantly losing in sales, PS3 needs a price drop. Bringing the console to a price on par with the 360 would have people start considering it more. "Hmm It's got a Blu-Ray Player and the console for a nice price..." Is what the consumer will start thinking at the very least.

they are desperate, they always have been desperate
they don't make a large profit off of the PS3 because people at first just wanted the Blu ray player, now you can buy the blu ray player for less money.

Compare the price of:
blu ray player (from Sony)- $190.99 (lowest price of a Sony player that I could find)

PS3- $299.99

the difference is $109, meaning that they are essentially selling the system for $109 and the rest is the blu ray player. They also don't have the massive library of games that the 360 or the Wii has because of the 360's early release + backwards compatibility and With the Wii's low price, larger library, larger audience, and backwards compatibility. Yea the PS3 has backwards compatibility but it also started at the highest price, fanboys bought them at that price but unfortunately for Sony not that many people are CRAZED.

the PS2 started the same way and it took them 6 years to start turning a profit, of course they are still trying to sell off PS2's meaning that they did not make as much money as they wanted too, and they still have a large quantity of them for around $117+ meaning that yes, the PS2 for the COUNCIL ALONE is more expensive than the PS3.

Thats rally all there is to be said. I think that this question is more suitible for the Sony sales team because their the ones taking the real gamble.
