I have had a PS3 since launch day and I have gathered many games over this period of time, but something odd is happening to the discs. Roughly about 4 of them have cracked from the center to about midway on the disc. It is a very fine line but the games are broken forever. I have lost many good games because of it (Rainbow Six Vegas 2) and I was wondering if it has happened to anyone else?

I am extremely careful when handling my games and they are never left lying about the place so I don't think it has happened due to roughness on my part.

Also I was able to trade in the games in some shops because one of the guys behind the counter didn't even open the case to check if a disc was in it never mind looking for scratches so I did get some money out of it.

Have you let anyone borrow these games? They could not be as careful with them as you are.

Outside of a Blu-ray disc being defective (which I haven't heard about many) the only thing I would wonder is environmental. Are they in an area which can get really cold then really hot? or vice-versa? That's about all I can think of if you're careful.

I haven't let anyone borrow them and the are kept in a cupboard at room temperature I guess. I am just really confused by it as 4 games have almost identical cracks in them.

Where do you live again so I remember not to buy preowned? haha joke

I think my friend had something like this happen his ps3 would only read certain discs sometimes they would come out with scratches. What I'd do would be get a DVD moive or something. Just a cheap bargain bin type thing and let it play through for several hours. If it comes out with a crack the damage was done by the ps3 and call sony to get it fixed. If not then there is something else causing it.

I know trading in broken games is a bit dodgy but if you can get away with it why not! Just stay away from shops in Northern Ireland lol.

I am thinking of giving Sony a call but just wanted to see if it was a widespread problem first and I also really do not want to spend hours on the phone just to be transferred from one department to another.

What are the chances.....

Anyway, no I don't think it's widespread. As I said before I'd make sure it's the ps3 doing it before going to sony. You may end up sending it off only to have them tell you its not broken.

I used to have this problem with certain 360 games, before I realised what the cause was and started keeping all my discs in a CD wallet.

With certain types of DVD/game cases (usually 2 disc special edition cases), if you're not very careful pedantic when taking the disc out/putting the disc back into the case, the spindle can crack the disc in that manner.

Also the discs are a lot more brittle when heated up from being played in a console, and if you don't press the 'notches' of the spindles in properly, in the exact way they were designed to accept discs, then you can crack the centre of the disc when putting it back on the spindle.

It's quite a common problem, especially with the newer disc cases which have a harder, less forgiving spindle which refuses to let the disc go and makes it harder to put the disc back in.

Remember the spindles in the cases are larger than the holes in the discs, so if you don't press the spindles in first to make them smaller, then you can easily, accidentally crack the disc.

Incidentally, the discs not reading properly in your console can be a sign of this happening, since the hole in the centre of the disc is now larger than it should be, so it slips as the disc drive tries to spin it, because it sits loose on the disc drive's spindle.

Well to put it in simpler terms than Jamash, it's like this: play the game much, the disc gets hot. When it's THAT hot, if you put it in the box without care (that is, pressing the center of the spindle and letting the disc slip into it), then it could break. I've heard of it happening a couple of times, though I've never experienced it myself (knock on wood).
