PS3 comeback

I am considering buying a PS3, but I don't think it will become a competitor to the Wii.

I don't think that's neither Sony's nor Nintendo's intention. The Wii was never mention to directly compete with the Xbox 360 or PS3. It was marketed to suck up all the outside sales, and only then did they realize how BIG that fringe (outside of the core game players) market was. Can anyone honestly and rationally say that Wii ports from Xbox or PS3 games are even worth the effort or the coin?

I know a lot of people who own both a Wii and a PS3/Xbox 360 for that very reason. You buy a Wii for Wii-specific games and a PS3/Xbox for the rest.

Exclusives and Killer App's do not sell consoles. MANY games sell consoles. When the PS3 has a larger library then the 360 we can talk.

Also- advertising would help, Sony.

Actually , now more and more game are being developed for PS3 , then ported to the 360. Now that they know how to program for the cell , it is MUCH easier for devs to have the PS3 version as the lead version. So from now on PS3 version of multi-paltform games will be either exactly the same or better on the PS3 . As for the online , well , on the PS3 it for free .

"From now on"? Are you sure? Because people were saying the same thing last year and devs are still using the 360 as the lead console. If you could name a few titles that are being developed with the PS3 as the lead and then ported to the 360 it would bolster your claim.

Final Fantasy XIII started life as a PS3 exclusive, it's not like SquareEnix had much of a choice when picking their lead console for development. I believe the same goes for Mirror's Edge. I also don't believe RE5 is being developed for the PS3 and ported to the 360, but if you have proof of that I'd like to see it.
Once we've done that, I'd also like to see evidence that any of the games you mentioned run better on the PS3 than the 360 - please let me know which versions are superior once you're done returning from next year.

Even ignoring that, two games do not equal "more and more" games.

Do 5 very high profile games?

And I can't find a single article that lists all 5, just different articles saying the different games.

Without collusion it doesn't count.

The main problem I have, now that I'm considering getting a system, is that games that come out for both XBox and PS3 always seem to be better on the XBox (according to reviews). It might be an issue with the framerate (often) or DLC, but games that should be identical always seem to be a little better on the 360.

It's not exactly true. They are developed concurrently because any pitfalls that arise on one platform that can't be resolved get cut on all platforms to keep the game homogeneous. Porting a game after release is usually at the request of the publisher. Making a game exclusive usually only happens when a deal is struck. The PS3 and 360 are a lot closer in capabilities than most people realize.

What you said can be taken many ways. I always thought that icons sold games. You can have as many terrible games as you want, but the ones that can be marketed the most effectively are the ones that sell. There are many terrible games the sell many, many copies because of good marketing [Kain & Lynch - Mercenaries 2]. And then you have par games that sell at record breaking quickness, because it's a franchise [halo3].

the PS3 has a few third party developers making games for next year that look quite good. My only issue is that I don't want to see the PS3 become the Dreamcast, because that's what it's looking like.

According to Sony in May, ps3 is already outselling the 360.

At least there are a few more games released for the PS3 this year, rather than dodgy ports.

I agree with you that there is no reason to purchase a 360 over a PS3, but now that we can't compare prices, we compare drawbacks and pros:
the PS3 has a Blu-Ray player...but that won't really matter for another 4-6 years when HD takes over DVDs, so for now an XBOX 360 is fine.
The 360 has better online(IMO)...but PS3 online is free, so for now a PS3 is fine.
See, they both have enough pros and cons to balance each other out, making the decision maker the exclusives, and since many exclusives are becoming multi-platform, that won't even matter for much longer.

Oblivion , hands down , but that is kind of a different situation.

EDIT : I cant seem to find it , but I remember reading an article on either Joystiq or PS3 fanboy , that devs were starting with the PS3 because porting from PS3 to 360 is MUCH easier then the other way around .

That was "just" in Europe, though. The 360 is doing better in the US, and nowadays also in Japan.

Just a small thought here folks, whilst the PS3 may not close the gap on the 360 and the Wii in the short term surely the chances of it catching them in the long term is much higher. Of the three consoles it's the one with the longest potential shelf life.

Released a year after the others
Supposedly taunted by it creator as having a ten year shelf life
Still has untapped potential from it's cell processor

The XBox had a pathetically short shelf life (at least in the UK barely 2 and a bit years compared to the PS2 near 6.) True part of that was due to it's poor sales and the vast money pit its on going sale created. Mind you the reported shelf life for the 360 seems to be 7 years

so that puts its death at 2012. That's 5 years ahead of the date penciled in for the PS3.

The Wii seems to be a bit harder to pin down in terms of expected shelf life but can anyone see it still kicking about in 2012? Really?

I'm been convinced that over the next two years, PS3 sales will rise sharply because of games like Little Big Planet and Resistance 2.

Look at the sales for Little big planet. No one is buying a new console for that. It appeals to a tiny portion of Ps3 owners so that is why it fails to sell.

I wasn't talking about stats, I was talking about myself. I'm part of that tiny percent, I guess. I wouldn't buy a console just for one game, but having that kind of exclusive to appeal to me the way it did opened my eyes that the PS3 hasn't been drowned out completely and is creating a strong market. It made me realize that the PS3 hasn't disappeared completely and actually has most of the games that I have on my Xbox. The only real appeal over the PS3 that the Xbox has is it's lower price.
