PS3 does a PS2-esque 'makeover'

From what I've read, Sony will be coming out with another iteration of the PS3. This one will be slimmer and be stripped of features currently on PS3s. I've also heard it will have poorer heat management and may be more likely to overheat. Call me crazy (I just know someone will) but it looks like Sony is about to make the same mistake they made with the PS2 when they came out with the "Slim" PS2. What do you think of this move? Will it increase PS3 sales or backfire on Sony?

I honestly don't see any disadvantages to doing this. A cost effective re-image of a console never hurt... especially with the PS2.

Sony made a slimmer version of the PS1, PS2, and PSP (twice over, not counting the "Go"), it was only a matter of time before the same was done for the PS3

They fucked up the lasers for starters. So basically most people had to go in and get them replaced or realigned.
Also there was some talk of them overheating. I dunno personally, I have a big old style one. I just opened her up the other day and gave her a nice old dust out.

I've got one, though, never had disk or heat problems.

My PS2 slim wiped a memory card while I was playing Jak X Combat Racing. Internet research indicated it was due to overheating associated with the slim model. I never had any problems with my regular PS2.

So, I remain skeptical of the new Slim model.

I also didn't care for the PSP 3000 slim model. I thought the graphics were actually worse than those of the 2000. The trend seems to be that I prefer early model PlayStation hardware at each iteration.

They tend to overheat when you leave them lying flat. What surface you have them on plays a factor, too. I think they eventually addressed this issue with a slight tweak to the design. My room mate had one that overheated while we were playing tekken tag, it was acting all kinds of screwy before it finally froze up. Compare that to my old school one that only stopped working when the motor in the DVD drive finally seized up after 6 years of daily use.

I've never had a ps2 just a big old ps1 and then the shiney ps3 and tbh the slim ps3 doesn't look that much slimmer :S i was expecting something thinner but hey ho

That would explain it, I bought the PS2 Slim pretty late in it's lifespan, about 1-2 years after the original came out.

Still got it now, not a problem.

And on that note, I think Sony's problem is rushing things.

The PS2 slim was never a bad idea. In fact, it was quite the opposite.

I personally think it's great that they've released a new version of the PS3, I have the original. The reason it's great is that hopefully this means that Sony will continue to promote the PS3 with the same (shameless) vigour that they did the PS2, which in turn will hopefully mean that the system will have games made for it and enjoy support for anywhere near the same amount of time that the PS2 did.

what exactly was the mistake with PS2 slim? .. also .. ps3's only overheat if the owner didn't find a well ventilated place for it .. and from what i heard the PS3 slim has an even better cooling system

Are you sure you're not confusing the slims with the original PS1s that had to be placed on their side or upside down?

Actually the PS3 Slim is very much the same although it has been upgraded. 33% smaller, faster, cooler, more easily accessible HDD can be removed and swapped and will not void warranty. although you cannot install a different operating system like linux, i dont think there is a mistake with this its just another option no real reason to upgrade if you have a PS3 but a better price point for the amount of memory and an overall better performing system make it a smart buy.

The PS2 slim failed how exactly? Even now the PS2 is one of the highest selling/grossing consoles on the market.
