Actually... not... really. :/

Modification, yes. Modified in the sense that you fucked with the console to an unholy extent? No. :p
No, I know. But maybe the issue is that as a result of a new hard drive that stores so much memory, it ends up running hotter, and as a result, overheats the system?

From what I've read, one of the reasons the Yellow Ring happens is because of overheating, the motherboard loses the connection to the processor, or something of the sort...
Yet, I don't know of any drive that would get that hot. :/ Plus, the HDD is too far away. :/

You would have to put in... something like... well, this for it to get anywhere near hot enough to do anything. Even then, it runs cooler than you think, so the odds of the heat killing your PS3 are about as likely as me committing suicide with a rubber ducky. :p

If it's a 7200rpm, then you have nowhere near the heat to do anything to your system. :p

EDIT to your EDIT: Ironic as all fuck. XD

Though, you could just take out the drive and put it into another PS3/back the saves up from there. :/

Then I guess it must be my power supply afterall. Like I said, it felt like one side of it came off its screw. Like, when I plug the power cord into the PS3, I feel it give way on one side a little bit. And that shouldn't be happening.

While we're on the subject of overheating, does everyone's PS3 Slim get significantly hotter than the original PS3? It's like, every time I play a game, and I eject it, the disc is warm. A lot warmer than I'm comfortable with.

Also, I just installed the update on my PS3 slim, and it's fine... I guess that's good news.

EDIT to your EDIT >_<:

Well, unless I actually get my PS3 fixed/replaced with a refurbished one or whatever it is that Sony does, then even with the hard drive, that data is wasted, because most of it is the PS2 data, that I can't use without a backwards compatible PS3.
But yeah, if I do end up sending it in for repairs or whatever, I'll definitely put the old 60 gig HDD back in.

Hopefully that is the case. :/

Hmm, I cannot entirely say this with much experience since I have only owned a Slim but, I find it to be... about what it should be. :/

You could always get a PS2 Memory Card Adapter Cable with some Cards and copy the data to them. :p Though... I do not see that completely fixing the situation...

Well, how would you compare the heat of the disks to, say... Any other console you own? Even my 360 doesn't get that warm. I mean, it doesn't feel DANGEROUSLY warm like my laptop, but still.
Also, it's very, very quiet. I can hear the cooling system, but it's barely noticable. Which, if it's working properly, is a good thing. But sometimes I get paranoid that it's my cooling system not working. Is this normal?

I've had my 360 discs get very warm before, as in, so hot you wonder why they have not melted yet. :/ The Slim is about... normal to good. :p

Yes, it is supposed to sound like that more or less. :p Feels awesome when watching Cardcaptor Sakura in the middle of the night and I can't even hear the system. :D

Well, hopefully that means that my PS3's cooling system isn't broken, especially since it's been like that since I bought it. Hopefully this one will give me at least 3 years of outstanding service.
Tomorrow I'm gonna have to inquire about how much a PS2 would cost me. I didn't think I'd ever be buying a PS2 again. Of course, I bet right after I do get it, just about every PS2 game I ever liked will be announced as an HD PSN release, with my luck. Ah well.

I guess this thread is kinda pointless, since it seems like the problem wasn't the result of the new firmware. I'm guessing the reason why it happened when it did is because when the new firmware finished installing, it had to restart the system, which resulted in the problem activating itself. Meaning it would've happened the next time I turned off the system anyway.

I was about to say, "There goes modding my PSP" then I realised it was for PS3.
If you really would want to mod your console/psp you shouldn't download official updates anyways, so i wouldn't affect you either way.

Hmm I just updated to 3.56 about a week ago and it caused me to not be able to watch BluRay movies (games worked) so hopefully 3.6 fixes that... I don't really have any other option.

Don't bring that shit here, it's not welcome. We had a week of platform wars and I don't want them brought back.

Have you tried calling Sony's support number for the PS3? They're more likely to have the answer for something like this. They will be able to tell you whether those lights mean something is wrong with your hardware or if it's a problem with the update.

This happened to a friend of mine a few updates ago, although it didnt break anyone elses ps3 that i knew, sony admitted it was their fault and geve him a new refurbished one out of warrantee, check, because if it is a software fail, not a hardware fail, they might give you a new one.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

...I'm a little worried to go update my console now though. Still, that's pretty funny.

EDIT: So I just finished updating mine. No problems. Unfortunately, I just checked the box and mine's an 80 gig, so I guess that doesn't help much.

So, does this update brick ALL 60 phats? Or am I ok to switch 'er on?
Wouldn't you think there would be one hell of a bigger shitstorm by now if it really did affect all ps3s?
Did I ask about all PS3's?

I didn't see you giving this much of a snotty answer to the OP.

Actually, now that I examine it, it turned yellow for a moment. So this seems like one of those "Yellow Light Of Death" problems. Hopefully it's fixable then.
But yeah, it happened right after installing the new firmware.
May just be a coincidence I have a fat PS3 and its fine. Most of my friends have been on and off all day.

Regardless I hope you get it fixed and hope it isn't because of the update.

Hey, guys. Just wondering, is anyone else here having issues with the firmware 3.60? Like, I installed it, and now my system won't turn on. I try to turn it on and it just keeps flashing the red light at me (I have the old 60 Gig model).
I know I heard that Sony was gonna be like, banning Jailbroken PS3s, but mine wasn't. I've never pirated on a console in my life. The only thing I did to modify my system is install a bigger hard drive.

So I don't know what it is, the install process seemed to go fine, and then my system just shut off on me. Now it won't turn on. Help?
I didn't know there were problems. I have the slim 120 gb and I got forced to download the firmware the other day.
It works just fine. I've been really lucky with avoiding these console breaking upfates.

I happen to own a fat 60 GB PS3. Going to see what happens if I update it.

Edit: Downloaded and installed 3.60. It's still working.

Thank you! I haven't turned mine on since reading this thread, now I shall go and install it.

Meh, 2 out of 3 people laughed. I'm happy with my weak joke.
